LZ1 reacted to bishward in Just wanted to say thanks ...
I consider myself to be fairly "good at computers" - I've dipped my toe into the murky waters of Linux and often swear at Windows for being uncooperative. The whole process of getting a vpn working seemed a bit beyond my skills and I assumed I'd try, fail and give up. I am therefore relieved that, as luck would have it, my Google search for "best vpn" brought me here.
Every aspect of your service is clearly explained, from signing up and paying to the installation and configuration of clients on Windows, iPhone and Android. I can't imagine the amount of time, effort and skill you folks must have invested to bring us the freedom of privacy, and I can't thank you enough.
Shut up and take my money.
One teeny tiny thing, could you make the website mobile-friendly?

LZ1 got a reaction from xairv in Server for Finland ...
Of course of course, I get you. I think we all see a lot of potential for Air, haha. I think it's excellent that you chose to share your thoughts, ideas and enthusiasm in such a constructive way. Air will most definitely consider your proposal. Especially after a couple of months when they re-visit the subject I think. It's just that there should be reasons, in line with Airs mission, for setting up a server. Air isn't quite the kind of VPN that would set up a server just for x content to be available for y people.
There's a topic called "Poor Pia" in the off-topic forum that you might be interested in reading, in regards to the Russian situation.
Thank you for the compliment. I hope they'll be useful for you!

LZ1 got a reaction from xairv in Server for Finland ...
Hello !
@xairv
I just want to politely remind you and anyone else who might be reading this nice discussion, that zhang, despite the moniker "Staff", is not an AirVPN employee and so does not speak on behalf of AirVPN officially. It's more like "Volunteer Staff" or "Forum Staff" (quoting Staff account). Only the Staff account, which now replied already, is the official voice of AirVPN . Just to be clear, as it could sound like you were making efforts to persuade Zhang, when it's not him who's in charge .
I'd love more servers personally. But not at the expense of the quality that Air is known to maintain. I think you make some good points though. How about getting Air to support grassroots organisations instead, like the EFF and others, which fight for our digital rights, so that they can help change the legal landscape in the various countries around the world? Then we'd get more servers too, surely .

LZ1 got a reaction from Just a Fred in How Lenovo & MS backdoor your OS ...
That's a tall order. The problem is that even if you ran Linux, there's still software which runs on the various pieces of hardware in the laptop. This software is called firmware. In principle, we don't know
what this firmware does, if it's not open. Maybe you should take a crack at Linux anyhow, it's not too late. You could download a distro like Ubuntu or Linux Mint and burn it to a CD. This CD could then be used as a
"live CD", which would let you try out the OS without actually installing it. Alternatively, you could download virtualbox and run a Linux distro in there. You don't have to be a command-line guru to use it.
There's options to buy laptops pre-installed with Linux
Heck, you don't even need to install anything. You can just try it in your browser!
As the OP said, providers like ThinkPenguin provide laptops which are perhaps less prone to snooping.
But really, it's kind of an oxymoron to not want snooping, yet insist on running Windows, sorry. Windows is governed by Microsoft & is closed-source. MS being MS, it most likely has backdoors; just check Windows 10
I recommend you watch this.

LZ1 got a reaction from RidersoftheStorm in Whonix: "combining Tor with a VPN can make you less anonymous!" ...
Yes seriously, unless the pretty recent post from the Staff account on exactly this issue is now outdated due to some update of policy that I haven't heard about. Zhang is not an employee and only posts from the account called "Staff" can be said to be speaking on the behalf of AirVPN in an official sense. Sheivoko is still here somewhere. So I don't know why you'd insinuate the forum isn't still great, based seemingly on such a superficial parameter. I was only informing you of the situation as I know it, so that perhaps zhang or Staff didn't have to repeat it themselves. We shouldn't derail the thread.

LZ1 got a reaction from RidersoftheStorm in Whonix: "combining Tor with a VPN can make you less anonymous!" ...
Hello! Zhang isn't a Staff member, but he'll surely take it as a compliment that he could be mistaken for one . He's therefore also not employed by Air. Thus he doesn't represent Air in an official sense either and what he says likewise doesn't reflect official AirVPN policies or thoughts. Only the Staff account does. Zhang and Staff often state things very matter of factly and don't use too many smiles, yet this is just a writing style. Yet you can be sure he didn't mean what he said in a bad way. Good day.

LZ1 reacted to psychlops in Dock icon color ...
This may have been asked before, but I haven't seen it.
I’m using Eddie on a Mac, but I’m guessing it’s the same on Win.
The dock icon is blue when Eddie isn’t active. It changes to gray while connecting, then back to the same shade of blue when connected. It’s almost impossible to tell at a glance whether Eddie is active or not. Is there any way to change the icon to red when it’s down, then blue when it connects? That little black dot doesn’t quite do it.
That’s the only thing I preferred about Viscosity over Eddie… the icons changed to a distinct color depending on the state of the connection.
It’s a small thing, I know, but it could prevent a big mistake.

Well I think that's silly, unless.... You take a look at the media landscape. I don't think it's unreasonable, for instance, to have reservations against how the big media companies act. After all, if this entire copyright issue was an isolated one, then maybe it wouldn't matter. But the fact of the matter is, it affects societies around the world quite a lot, when lobbyists from the Entertainment Industry affect new laws in countries across the world. Leading to, in no particular order, things such as:
Increased surveillance. Both on the internet and off. Meaning it increasingly becomes a human rights issue, as surveillance impacts democracy, which impacts how we live. Increased restrictions on devices which we are supposed to own, because we bought them & when we didn't buy them, we use them; such as the software in all manner of trains, vehicles, powergrids and more. DRM, in other words, which if nothing else, makes "closedness" acceptable and even expected, instead of openness. Increased levels of resources expended by societies to police these things. Meaning that you're diverting likely limited resources away from dangerous crime, to copyright crime. Such as when a guy in Sweden was apparently arrested for running a free Swedish subtitling website, where volunteers could add subtitles for various movies. You'd think this would be in the interest of the rights holders, as it's basically free-localization and thus more people can get word of their movies and perhaps move to buy them. But nope. Increased or potentially increased, levels of corruption; it's very easy to pay off a Politician or some other high-up figure to back the cause of the Entertainment Industry. Decreased ease with which people from all over the world can get access to culture, knowledge & different points of view. After all, soon you might require a login for the web; they'd surely like that. Decreased user-friendliness, such as when DRM becomes so restrictive that pirates have an easier time playing a game than someone who actually bought it. Increased risk for the users. The Sony example is good; Sony shipped CDs which had malware on them, in an attempt to control its property. So I have to say, whether ideologically rooted or not, there's at least some pragmatically-oriented things which become objectively worse, if everyone simply complies with the wishes of the Entertainment Industry and their copyright wishes; at least for everyone else who doesn't happen to be a part of the 10% perhaps. It's not just about movies or songs or games. It's fundamentally more about who has control over how we choose to live. How for instance, can it be, that it's so difficult to get access to hardware which doesn't spy on you or is otherwise closed? Well I'm sure that one of the reasons is that the rights of corporations are valued more than the rights of individuals and societies. So I think while "piracy" gets a lot of attention, the issue is larger still and is just another cog in a larger battle.

LZ1 reacted to OmniNegro in Kickass Torrents Seized by the FBI ...
Sadly, the only reason media trolls stop using any particular restrictions/DRM is when they have a newer, more sinister one to replace the old.
Big companies like Sony can make millions of copies of malware containing discs and distribute it without any consequence, and already most people have forgotten about this nonsense.
Intel puts spy chips on their motherboards, and refuses to answer any questions about what the chip even does. (Hardware DRM of a sort.)
UEFI is standardized to allow companies the right to have a malicious rootkit on your motherboard that is awake and active even when your system is powered down. (It works via the CR-2032 Lithium battery when the power is off.)
Cars are being sold with non-optional GPS trackers, so your every movement can be plotted and your location is known.
You simply cannot avoid all this bullshit. I would not be surprised to learn that toasters are being sold with microphones and wifi in them so they can call home and report back the logs of everything they heard.
If you want a measure of safety, look to the old rather than the new. And above all, educate yourself about every component. You need to be aware. Information is power and power is money. Have all the information that effects you.

LZ1 reacted to Guest in Download speed issue ...
How can you accuse AirVPN of having the issue on their end? There is a HIGH chance that your ISP can be blocking the port they use for encrypted traffic, plenty of reasons really and since me and many others max out our fibre connections I'll ask again how can you accuse AirVPN, what evidence do you have to support your claim?

LZ1 reacted to zhang888 in Can my real IP be seen while using VPN? ...
Too much Hollywood "IP trace skills" without details or any facts.
When you use the VPN service according to the FAQ guides, or when you use the client with the default settings,
which are always meant to be -secure by default- on purpose - you are not exposed to any leaks. Unless that
"friend" installed some software on your machine that can bypass your VPN tunnel.
So you should at least provide more details about what exactly was the scope of this test.

LZ1 reacted to b8at9v in Tresorit.com can't be found ...
Hello,
I'm a Tresorit user (encrypted cloud storage) and it seems that the AirVPN servers Aquilae, Tauri and Velorum can't connect with that server.
Attached is the report generated after checking routes, and full report is here:
https://airvpn.org/routes/?q=https%3A%2F%2Ftresorit.com
Do you think I should contact tresorit.com about this?
I'm not sure where the issue is (AirVPN servers or tresorit.com server).
Thanks!

LZ1 got a reaction from b8at9v in Is A Website Blocked? Then Check This Guide First [Feedback Appreciated] ...
Hello !
When a website is blocked or things aren't working so well somehow, that sucks. But posting a new topic will not automatically help.
So before posting a new thread/topic, I recommend that you try these things first, to help yourself and everyone else out:
Things To Try First
Try check out the AirVPN Route Checking tool. Put the name of the website, such as www.netflix.com into the search field. Click search. Then refresh the page & look at the HTTP column. Try and change the server that you're using; especially to servers from other countries, rather than just servers from the same country you were first connected to, as sometimes the servers of 1 country are all having issues. Especially if the Route Checking tool shows a red color in the HTTP colum or codes like 403. The HTTP Codes mean different things. Try check out ipleak.net and make sure that the IP & DNS address fields only show 1 address each: those from AirVPN. Otherwise your ISP could be blocking you. For Windows, try going to your Control Panel>>Internet Connections>>Change Adapter Settings>>Right Click each adapter>>Properties>>Untick IPv6>>Click Ok. Similar steps for MacOS/Linux. Try use the AirVPN forum search field in the top right corner, to see if a similar thread exists already. It's better and easier if all the same posts are in the same thread. Try click the "Most Viewed" button, on the horizontal blue line, under the black "Start New Topic" button, in order to see the most viewed threads easily & quickly. Try and check that your ISP or country isn't listed here. Because these ISPs block various things. Try and check if the website is listed here. Sites listed here should be automatically unblocked, regardless of which server you use. (This is called "Micro-routing"). Try and see if the content you want, is available via a torrent site, if you wish. You could then use qBittorent to download it using P2P technology, which AirVPN fully allows. (Not all VPNs do)
Does AirVPN Care About Blocked Sites?
Yes! AirVPN Staff routinely reply to all kinds of different threads on these forums. This includes replies to threads about Netflix. Moderators do too! However due to there being a lot of new threads, they don't always reply to each one. Especially if the thread already exists; such as the many threads about Netflix. This is why it's important to keep all posts about the same website, in the same threads, instead of just making a new thread, which won't get any attention. But the problem is, that AirVPN or even any other VPN provider, can't always do anything about blocks. That's the truth. Because sites like Netflix actively try to block VPNs. It's in AirVPNs Mission Statement to fight all kinds of blocks or attempts at censorship; so it's not because Air isn't trying to fix things.
When You Post A Thread, Consider This
If you absolutely have to post, then please include: a link to the blocked website, the AirVPN server you used, any error messages you got & any replies from support staff from the blocked site. You get bonus points if you also tell us that you already tried the route checking tool and other things listed in the first section. . Double the bonus if you post in an existing thread instead. Posting also doesn't guarantee that the problem will be fixed. But if you follow the suggestions here, then you will make fixing the problem both quicker and easier for Air & everyone else :].
If you have questions or suggestions, please do not be afraid of posting them here or sending me a PM. If you're new to VPNs, then please feel free to check out my New User guide.
Please do provide feedback on this thread if it helped you or is missing something!
Thank you for reading !

LZ1 got a reaction from Valunker in Does using air vpn with plugins like zenmate give extra security ? ...
Hello !
No I wouldn't say so. But it depends. Zenmate for one, was found to have some less-than-ideal policies:
AirVPN is already very secure as it is. But if you go to my guide, you'll find many links to ways you can make yourself more secure and/or anonymous; such as by using Tor and other browser extensions which are good. Whether it *should* be used is up to you and who your enemies are. If you're the next Snowden, then yes, but then you've got bigger problems. If you're just a casual user, then perhaps not. But if you're trying to be as anonymous as possible, then you should definitely look into Tor at the very least. Security is not just 1 thing you can do, or even 2. It's very much a process. Welcome to AirVPN

LZ1 got a reaction from FromtheWalls in [Suggestion] Eddie to respect the Window shutdown procedure ...
Hello !
You might not get much traction for that idea, because as the Staff will tell you (and it doubles as great advice for life, if you ever fancy being a hitman), that you must always kill Eddie with grace.
Which is, via it's own menus. It has been a bug that bad things will happen if you don't and I can confirm that. But on a practical level, it's due to Eddie needing time to save and/or restore various settings,
so that things work as intended afterwards and/or the next time Eddie is started. Network Lock is a good example of this, wherein it needs time to restore your firewall settings to their original settings.
However they're seemingly working on a different implementation for how NL handles windows & firewalls, so you might get lucky in this respect. However I think there's also various interactions with the
management portion of OpenVPN.exe that need to be communicated.

Hello!
To those who have the issue about a message like
Unknown interface IDor
Unexpected: NetLock WFP rule doesn't exists(andeby, internet_user, LZ1)
Please edit your network interface (Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections)
and re-enable the "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" checkbox.
Don't worry, Eddie implements IPv6 lock.
And de-check the flag "Disable IPv6 at OS level if requested" under Settings -> Advanced.
It's still a bug that prevents usage with IPv6 disabled, it will be fixed soon.
Kind regards

LZ1 reacted to Clodo in [project] Windows Pocket Firewall ...
Pocket Firewall for Windows (Vista and above, no XP)
Doesn't require any driver installation Portable Pocket, Safe, absolutely not OS invasive: if you brutally kill the process, rules are cleaned (persistent mode not yet implemented). Requires Administrator privileges Requires .NET 4 (at the moment) 32 bit and 64 bit edition It is not needed for Network Lock, IPv6 block or DNS Lock with Eddie (AirVPN client). Eddie 2.11 (currently under experimental phase) that already has it built-in.
It was born to study whether we can avoid the dependencies between Eddie (AirVPN Client) and Windows Firewall for the Network Lock / IPv6 lock / DNS lock features.
There are a lot of improvements that can be done (viewer/editor of rules running on the system, persistent rules across boot, etc).
I think it can be an interesting community project, a free and open source alternative to expensive firewall software.
I released all source-code on GitHub (under GPLv3).

LZ1 reacted to Staff in Download speed issue ...
Hello!
It is almost offensive to read the above when we are the only service in the world in our field that publishes a real time servers monitor that can be cross-checked to verify we are not lying about our commitment against overselling.
The reality is the exact opposite of what you said. We work to squeeze up to the last bit/s on each server line. The issue is challenging even with our AES-NI supporting processors, because we are working with a software (OpenVPN) that can run only in a single core of a CPU (per daemon), and in a semi-complex environment, in which the load on the CPU does not grow linearly (or in some other predictable way, at the moment we did not find any) with the amount of clients per daemon.
Just so you have an idea about the above problems (probably other services will not even tell you they exist) have a look here:
https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/Gigabit_Networks_Linux
After that, consider that our cipher for the payload of both Data and Control Channel is AES-256.
When you have done your homework, come back here and probably your messages will be fairer.
Kind regards
