Thanks for trying. I am also using KDE Plasma 5.14.5. The behaviour does no longer happen with version 2.18.3, so this is no longer an issue. -

If you choose a country other than your own as egress point, you're adding another layer of security. But in the end i don't think it matters much, as all traffic is encrypted and obfuscated. -

I think it is meant to be easier for a goverment to request data from within its own borders
