Apologies if this has been reported somewhere already. Eddie 2.23.1 (macOS 13.4) got stuck today when connecting and popped the error message as seen in the screenshot: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object". Had to force quit Eddie and it worked with the next attempt. Nothing I can reproduce, but maybe this is useful for improving something in the application.

I do have the same problem.

The error occurs when i do have Eddie in LoginItems (Autostart) and the network connection has not been established prior to the start of Eddie.

I need to re-start Eddie to fix it.

Hello,
Linux Mint 21 here.
I'm very happy with the new 2.23.1 version! It works perfectly for me (been testing it for 3-4 days now).
Some of the previous problems I had with 2.21 are gone, namely:
1. On start-up tries to connect, but never does. So I always had to Cancel and do it manually by picking a server to connect to.
2. After Sleep it would repeat the above sequence.
3. It often used to create two icons in the task bar - one on the right (active apps) and one in the middle.
4. It would always try to connect to a server in the Netherlands, by default, ignoring the fact that it is not closest to me and not the fastest connection.
All (and possibly more) of the above problems are now gone. Works fast and seamlessly.

Thanks!

Fellow Mint 21 user here.  Which package do you use?  I've tried the portable and appimage versions, but I'm reluctant to use the repo for Debian since that can potentially lead to package conflicts.  I have been using iVPN which provides repositories for Mint.

I'm having problems where Eddie hangs on checking DNS, and checking IPv4 (which I think the "check if tunnel works" setting disables), and for some reason it takes several minutes to cancel the test which makes no sense.  If I want to cancel, cancel now!  The hangs might be caused by trying to use AirVPN over the same connection as iVPN.

On a Mac with Catalina.  If the Mac goes to sleep with Eddie 2.23.1 still running, and then wakes up, Eddie restarts automatically.  But after that you can't exit Eddie.  It says Session Terminated but won't exit.  You have to force quit in Activity Monitor or reboot.

Doesn't happen if you quit and exit before any sleep occurs.

The iVPN GUI is quite a bit nicer and more modern with a slick interface.  In comparison, Eddie feels like it's from the 2000s or earlier.  The iVPN GUI is also open source, so perhaps Eddie could use it or maybe take some design ideas from it?

It also has the always-on firewall feature which AirVPN badly needs.  I don't want any traffic leaks.  Having the option to not disable the firewall upon exiting Eddie would be great!

The clients of other providers might have been made for individual platforms separately, like Windows, Linux, Max, Android, iPhone versions.

Eddie uses a development environment that it available at Windows and Linux with i suppose the MONO Framework. It is old but works, and it looks ugly indeed.

About iVPN i can say they quit PORT Forwarding in October 2023 this year for everyone.

Eddie has Network Lock. You can configure it to block local network too if you want.

I found out that if i wait 5 to 10 minutes Eddie 2.23.1 eventually does close it processes after pressing the exit button and when i think it hangs.

I prefer light in cpu and memory over eye-candy. But if the Eddie team is going to do a new eye-candy build, for Linux there are many libraries to choose from.

I did a double post, because if i quote someone larger than the text field, there is no way for me to enter my own text outside the quote field. Not even by using arrow keys to escape the quote field e.g. ( that is a Forum Bug not related to Eddie though.)

Hi WildWereWolf,
I installed it from the usual Download page, just swapped to Experimental. I think I uninstalled the previous version first. There was no collision for me.
Today, however, I connected to different servers, but I cannot access the internet. It successfully connected to the servers, but when I try to load something online, it doesn't work. Says no internet. I haven't changed anything in the settings of Eddie since I installed the experimental version.
Any ideas anyone?

This will fixed in the next release, thanks for the report.

Hi there,

unfortunately the 2.23.1 doesn't fix the issue described here :Eddie is shown in both the taskbar and the tray (withe kde).
I have tried any combination of the three checkbox "show tray icon" "minimize in tray" and "start minimized" and the result is the same : i have to  reduce myself the window each time eddie start by clicking "show the main window" then "hide the main window".

By the way the checkbox "minimize in tray" stay grey after i check the checkbox "show tray icon", so i have to save the settings and reopen the settings to check this one.

I would like and appreciate some GUI changes for Windows Client.
As in -nosplash screen checkbox (often the -nosplash screen freezes during win startup) tested on various win machines, due to this I'm still running on Eddie 2.16.3 without any issues!
Also when can we expect a dark theme for Eddie client ?

You're not afraid of the dark web, are you ?

Has anybody ever tried to use eddie-cli of any version (2.23.1 or any other) in the GNU/Linux but WITHOUT Xorg/Wayland and without DE (terminal only)? E.g. Ubuntu Server 22.04.

It does not work for me, it asks for local user password to ekevate privileges but after providing correct password it prints error and exits:

I've had some random crashes until 2.23.1 when changing servers manually (disconnect/exit and reconnect), those crashes seem not to happen so far with 2.23.2 during testing. Overall, 2.23.2 feels more stable to me personally (macOS 13.5), thanks!

Update: this issue fromjust happened (again) even with 2.23.2. As others have reported, I have been apparently not the only one who saw this error.

What happened?
  • I had an active connection running Eddie 2.23.2 and without disconnecting first, I just closed my Macbook lid (so Macbook went into standby)
  • After some time I came back and re-opened my Macbook lid: Eddie is then stuck trying to establish IPv4 connection but is not connecting.
  • I then click "disconnect": Eddie throws "Object reference not set to an instance of an object"
  • I am then unable to connect (clicking on any of the Eddie buttons) ... Eddie seems frozen
  • I will then have to hard-force kill Eddie application, restart Eddie and establish new connection
In my opinion, something seems to be not right when Eddie is not properly disconnected or exited so it hangs up.

Updated from 2.22.0 to 2.23.2 and connecting will always get stuck at "Checking route IPv4".

With 2.22.0, I used to boot the system, start eddie+networklock, and then connect to WiFi. Connection to servers would work fine.
After updating to 2.23.2, it seems that after system boot, I need to connect to WiFi first, and only then start eddie+networklock for it to be able to establish connection to servers.
I would prefer to connect to network only after eddie+networklock are active, as before.

On a Mac using Mojave and the latest 2.23.2 version I can't seem to get past the following error when starting Eddie:

There is no available or enabled Network Lock mode, sorry.

Any idea what the issue is?

Win11 Beta.
Been going on over a year now.
Still cant get this to start with system.
Is this something I need to set up with the VPN in windows settings?
because checking tick boxes and setting up tasks isn't doing anything.
Anything ????

I had a similar problem and the following fixed it:

open Windows Services -> EddieElevationService -> Properties -> Statup Type -> from "Manual" to "Automatic" then rebooted and the problem was solved.

Thank you for answering but alas, that was one of the first things I did
over a year ago. Checked recently and it's still set to Automatic.

I am on Xubuntu 22.04 LTS, and with this latest beta 2.23.2 I noticed that the log is getting constantly spammed with "DNS of the interface 'Eddie' switched to VPN DNS - via systemd-resolved".
This does not happen when I downgrade to 2.22.2.

Hello,

The new version is unstable for me, many websites don't load anymore or take ages to load (I did try to uninstall/reinstall package and reset config files).
Can you make available the previous 2.22.2 version to download again to allow us to rollback ?

Regards,

Go to the "download" page and select "other versions", then select the version you want.
