Asus RT-AC86U won't resolve europe.vpn.airdns.org

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I'm trying to set up the VPN in my Asus router. I created a config on https://airvpn.org/generator/. Problem is that I don't get an connection. Obviously the router can' t resolve the address. If I use an IP (62.102.148.144) it's working. I did set up 62.102.148.144 and 62.102.148.144 as DNS server. Anyone an idea how to solve this problem?

Second problem is, when I start the VPN client (with IP) it's working fine, after stopping the DNS resolution is not working anymore. I can't reach any page. Just when I set the DNS Server in the router back to automatic it's working again...?!

Thanks!

Hello!

It's not clear if you followed this guide or not, but hopefully it's helpful.

I think you may have set the wrong DNS.

Hi!

Yes, that's the guide I followed. Surprising to me is that it is working when I set up the DNS manually. It's all working fine even when I start the VPN client (with IP). Only after I stop the VPN client again the Problem occurs?!

1) It's just best to pick a server that works well for you and stick to it, using IP address, not a name.

2) What you're using for DNS servers are not DNS servers.  That's why your name resolution isn't working.

3) If you're not using merlin asus (https://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/) already I strongly recommend that you do.  You'll have much more control over your openvpn client on the router, including the ability to do policy routing.  It also gives you a choice on how to handle DNS - you can force the use of AirVPN DNS resolver when the tunnel is up or you can disable DNS switching and continue to use the DNS resolver of your choice when the tunnel is up.  The best mix of security, privacy, and ease is to just force the use of AirVPN DNS resolver.

1.) Thanks will try this!

2.) Sorry for that, this has been an copy&paste failure. My DNS settings are: 10.4.0.1 and 185.121.170.176 (openDNS).

3.) I'm already using Merlin (also used it before on my RT-AC68U). Policy routing really sounds like a great idea. Do you have an hint how to set this up?

Major intention to switch from the 68U to the 86U was the bad VPN speed, even overclocking the 68U to 1000Mhz did not improve the speed issue. Unfortunately the 86U brings only about 8Mbit whereas Eddie on my PC speeds up to 100Mbit (Line is capable 200Mbit)...
