I've been unable to find something that meets my needs, and I'm not even sure whether such a book even exists. A lot of stuff about internet culture, internet history etc, but I'm more interested in the technical foundation, everything that makes the internet work. The book should include information about · the structure of the internet: nodes, clients, servers, backbones, sea cables... · information about communication standards: ISDN, DSL, 4G, 5G, ... · protocols and systems such as TCP/IP, HTTP, VPN, TLS, DNS, data packages ... Examples of how information gets processed and travels through the internet. Maybe also suggestions on how to try things out for yourself through tools or a command prompt. I'd also love some extras such as information design about the internet, how many visitors sites get, like an atlas about current topics, like the ones by Le Monde Diplomatique, only for the internet. Neither completely academic / dry for master students nor "what is the internet for my grandparents" kind of thing. Any suggestions are welcome, thanks.

I'm not sure such a thing exists in one simple book. You don't want an academic or newbie thing but you want academic and newbie topics covered. This will easily fill 2000+ pages. I think you should find multiple books from newbie through intermediate to advanced. I can give recommendations for German-language books, but will have to pass for the ones in English.

How is the server Eddie connects to selected? Based on ping like Eddie for desktop? Or just overal best server based on Load? I'm in Norway at the moment and it would make sense it connects to a Norwegian server but it connects to a server in the Netherlands. I've not set a favorite country, only blocked Germany. In the log I can see it detects me being in Norway but still connects me to a NL server, don't know why. Edit: discovered there is an option that forbids to connect to a server in the same country so that explains What is the reasoning behind selecting a NL server instead and not a let's say Swedish server? Or if I'm outside Europe, eg South Africa, what server country will be selected and why?

I thought a possible culprit could be the New Eddie version notification feature introduced in this release. Going with that hunch, I tried a couple of things Changing the Update channel selection to None from its default Stable (as aside, it should probably be changed to Beta for beta releases) didn't help. I was hoping for the update check and the call to curl to be bypassed altogether. Enabling Connect at startup also didn't help. I was hoping it might in case the problem was the failure to include the update URL in the default.xml file and thus in the iptables rules created on startup when network lock is enabled. That's about as far as I got. Still using the new beta, as I don't use auto network lock and the feature works fine when activated manually.

Take a look at 3rd point in my tutorial. After you do that, you need to forward ports on your router, but if that worked before, I guess you already forwarded your ports. Then you only need to connect to your REAL IP (IP given by your ISP), not AirVPN IP address and it will work.

I am not sure that verifying the connection "manually" is possible. From most of the logs I looked at, the connection is re-established inside 3 seconds. You pointed out 1 example where minutes seem to occur, but this looks like an exception. I checked again a few minutes ago and the connection seems to fail every 5 minutes, but is re-established inside 0-1-2 seconds. I don't know of a good method of checking the VPN status inside this timeframe? I can't just refresh the log page to wait for another window of a few minutes... Do you have any experience with the more recent build of DD-WRT I mentioned earlier (21153?). Is this something that can get fixed by another build?

Could you please post the complete logs for an additional check? **** Could you kindly provide instructions for which additional logs and where they are located? What I attached was the complete log on that page. I am unsure how to obtain deeper logging information in DD-WRT. I can ssh to the router and run some commands, but don't have a large amount of experience doing this with either OpenVPN, iptables or DD-WRT.

@rohko Correct, DNS leaks do not exist in Linux. This is a different issue and must be investigated anyway, but it's not related to DNS leaks. How does Eddie handle DNS (check "Preferences" > "DNS")? Since you rely on that script to handle the DNS push, Eddie must not interfere and you can focus on why your script does not work. Make sure to set "DNS Switch Mode" to "None" in "Preferences" > "DNS". Alternatively, disable your script, enable DNS push handling by Eddie itself (try with "DNS switch mode" set to "Automatic") and check whether the problem persists or not. If it does send a full system report generated by Eddie and taken just after the problem has occurred, please ("Logs" > LIIFE BELT icon > "Copy All" icon > paste into your message). Kind regards

Linux Mint 17.3 LTS (14.04 LTS), installed the latest 2.17.1 beta eddie-ui over v2.16.3 and upon restart saw notification about "removing network lock" before applying it again, then the new v2.17.1 would grind for a good while (couldn't switch to Servers tab) before crashing and apparently taking DNS down with the ship. For some reason the .deb of previous version 2.16.3 wasn't in /var/cache/apt/archives so I ended up redownloading it, uninstalling the latest beta (wouldn't allow downgrades) and reinstalling the v2.16.3. I would suggest pulling the latest version from the channel while you figure out the root of the problem. The changelog looks very appealing.

    Eddie 2.17beta released

Hi Staff, I just installed the new beta (2.17.1) on a MacOS laptop running the latest High Sierra (10.13.6). Upon firing up the Eddie beta, I got the attached error window. Eddie closed itself immediately after I clicked the "OK" button on the error window, so I didn't have a chance to grab logs (Eddie didn't finish starting up all the way when the error window popped). Had no internet connectivity after that until I rebooted the machine. I did install the beta over 2.16.3, fwiw, in case that's an issue. Although I have done that in the past with betas and not encountered any issues. Rolled back to 2.16.3 for now. If there's more I can do go help get useful info about this issue, please let me know. Many thanks...

I think I saw that error some time ago, when I was using 1 year or more old certificates for AirVPN. Did you upgrade your DSM to latest 6+ version? Did you get new certificates and ovpn file from airvpn? Be sure to imput them at correct place. Is your AirVPN membership active? If you are using DSM <6 (5.2, 5.1, 5.0, 4...) then you need to ssh and copy certificates and keys manually. Just delete VPN from Synology interface, try restart, and do everything from beginning. I see what you mean. That never happened to me. Script always starts VPN if it's not started, but I managed to reproduce it by just using those variables in script, without anything else. Thank you for find, I just moved those variables further down to one of IFs, so they will be called only when VPN is up for sure. Hope that solves it for you also.

So . . . I set up these firewall rules as per Randombit's instructions in post #47. When I came home my PC (Kubuntu 14.04) had lost connectivity. It showed it as connected to AirVPN but there was nothing coming in or out. To get connectivity back I had to turn off the firewall, re-connect then turn it back on again. Is this the way it is supposed to work? I guess it is . . . PS. Since upgrading to the latest version of Tixati V2.12, I occasionally have to turn off the firewall after adding new torrents otherwise it can't find any peers. Tixati is reports "attempting to bind port" then throws up the error "unconfirmed incoming port" and is unable to receive incoming DHT packets. If I turn off the firewall this DHT starts successfully. Obviously this is a problem with the firewall but this wasn't happening with earlier versions of Tixati. Has anyone else encountered this problem? PPS. Changed the port number and it seems to be okay now. Don't understand why?

Hello! a) It might be a problem in the management, not in the OpenVPN client connection itself. Chances are that your connection is actually always on, but of course further investigation is mandatory. Could you please post the complete logs for an additional check? c) Unfortunately not with the DD-WRT web interface alone. Kind regards
