Eddie Desktop Edition 2.27 beta released

Recommended Posts

Hello!

We are glad to announce that Eddie 2.27.1 beta has been released and is now available for public testing.

This release mainly focuses on fixing several issues reported by some users in the stable 2.26.2 release.

We hope to promote 2.27.1 to stable soon, once we have confirmation that these issues have been resolved.

To test it:
  • Go to the download page for your operating system.
  • Click “Switch to EXPERIMENTAL”.
  • Download and install Eddie 2.26.0 beta.

Eddie 2.27.1 beta is available for Windows, Linux, and macOS.

We are also continuing the larger work of modernizing Eddie Desktop, also with a new modern UI.
We know that many requested features are still waiting, including dark mode, split tunneling, Amnezia support, and more.
They are not forgotten. For this release, the focus was on fixes and updates that needed to reach users first.

Thank you for testing, and as always for your support.

Unfortunately, there isn't much we can do on our side. The default firewalld configuration in Fedora 44 is incompatible with Eddie's Network Lock.

Update to 2.27.1 here: https://airvpn.org/forums/topic/81340-eddie-desktop-edition-227-beta-released/
You can find information on how to resolve the issue here: https://eddie.website/support/linux-network-lock-unavailable-nft-owner/

I did the update to 2.27.1, changed the firewalld.conf to NftablesTableOwner=no - unfortunately the issue is still there.
Dont know if its relevant, but until 2.26.2 Fedora 44 and Eddie worked fine together for me, and even with deactivated network lock (Ensure in session is off) Eddie is unable to connect.

I had to install ovpn-dco 2.8.6 manually to make it work. It kept installing 2.8.2 with an Eddie client

Hello, and thank you for this new beta version of eddie-ui.
I just tested it on Devuan 5 (based on Debian 12), and unfortunately, the problem persists.
The terminal output is more detailed and mentions a library file named “linux-vdso.so.1”.
A `find` search shows that this binary does not exist on my machine.
A search on https://packages.debian.org/ shows that this binary is not present in the official Debian repositories.

Time to establish a connection has been significantly sped up as well.  Still working fine, but noticed I have to reconnect manually over night.

Please open a ticket (with the Support > Lifebelt > Upload report link), because i have in lab Fedora44, and 2.27.1 connect with or without NftablesTableOwner, with WG or OpenVPN, i need to understand your issue. Thanks.

Hello, and thank you for the detailed report.
First, a clarification so you don't spend more time on it: linux-vdso.so.1 is not a missing library. It is a virtual object that the kernel maps into every process.

Two things, please:
1) Right after a failed launch of eddie-ui, run:
ls -ld /run/eddie-vpn
ls -la /run/eddie-vpn
umask
2) Then run this one, which shows how that folder is created on your system:
pkexec /bin/sh -c 'umask; ls -ld /run/eddie-vpn'
Please send us the complete output of both. We will look into it and get back to you.
This because we can't reproduce your issue on our Devuan 6, and we need to understand why.
Thank you.

Thanks, Clodo, for the explanation about linux-vdso.so.1. (For those who are curious, you can find more information by typing `man vdso`.)

Below is the output of the requested commands on my Devuan 6 virtual machine, which I use to configure all the physical Debian 6 machines I install.
Note: In `/etc/login.defs`, the `UMASK` value is set to 007 to prevent any new user who isn’t a member of the `sudo` group—typically a child or a guest—from accessing another user’s files.

It works! 😀
Thank you so much for your work!

This fix for a persistent bug related to privilege escalation allows me to upgrade directly from version 2.25.1 to version 2.27.2.
I can therefore confirm to anyone who is a bit too quick to criticize the eddie-ui user interface that version 2.27.2 poses no obstacle to its use on current operating systems, and that—among many other options—it allows you to choose between 3 WireGuard protocols and more than 50 for OpenVPN!

When free software works perfectly, is secure, and offers the end user so much freedom of choice in a graphical interface, we should 👏 thank and encourage the developers rather than criticizing the project for no good reason without contributing improvements in the form of pull requests or forks.

🌻 I hope that other users who encountered similar privilege escalation issues will take as much pleasure as I did in thanking the development team.

Eddie 2.27.2 is running perfectly on Linux Mint using kernel 6.8.0-142.  I am using the older kernel "age" since its on a host OS while my VMs are running the new stuff and Eddie is doing fine on the newer mint kernels too.

Hola,

Just a quick heads-up, as per posts below:
And here:
This still seems to be a problem on version 2.27.2 on a Windows 11 laptop/PC. Although, my issue isn't as bad as d3adf1sh's.

It connects to the server for me after waking from sleep, but sites don't load unless I double click the server from the Eddie UI list and cycle the connection again which fixes the issue. Sometimes, very rarely, it gets stuck on "checking route to ipv4" where I have to completely close Eddie and relaunch. The longer the sleep, the more prevalent of the above issues happening. A short sleep cycle doesn't too often cause any issue when waking the machine. Please address/investigate this issue before releasing a stable version.

A clean install with 2.26.2 or 2.27.2 doesn't fix the issue. A minor inconvenience, but an inconvenience nevertheless.

Again, I repeat, salivating. :)

Thanks for all the hard work behind the scenes.

Hello, I am using the latest version of Eddie for Windows 10 (2.27.2) because I wanted to use openvpn with DCO. However, I noticed that this version crashes from time to time without any specific pattern. My windows event viewer only shows that "Eddie-cli-elevated.exe, version 2.26.0.0" errored with event id 1000.
When I re-open Eddie, the logs are re-written so I don't have any specific information to share.
Is there any place I can look for more information to share and help with the report of this issue?

Thanks in advance.
