Hi,

I am currently connected to Betelgeuse on a Netgear R7000 running dd-wrt firmware but the speeds I'm getting are massively throttled. I use Virgin and have a 150meg account, connected to the router without vpn from a gateway wirelessly onto my laptop I get 116mbps but as soon as I enable vpn I get 16mbps. Any hints, advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Please be more specific.

Are you using the router as the OpenVPN client?

If so, what speed to that same server do you get if you use the AirVPN software (Eddie) on a PC?

If not using the router as OpenVPN client then it's practically irrelevant and the problem lies elsewhere.

If you get higher speeds with Eddie on a PC than with the router as OpenVPN client, then you know the problem is the relatively slow CPU on the router.

Hi,

Firstly thank you both for your quick response, I'm not wonderful technology wise but can follow instructions so I will further look into your SSL recommendation LZ1 thank you.

go558a83nk, in answer to your questions:-

yes I am using the router as an openVPN client

I had never used eddie as I wished to have all my devices using the vpn but I have just downloaded it and connected to the same beetlegeuse server and unbelievably got a download speed of 148mbps (image attached). I did double check that I was connected through the eddie client and rechecked the speed. When I exited eddie and enabled the openvpn client on the router it dropped back to 16mbps.

However when I purchased the R7000 it was rated (and still is) one of the best for using a vpn on and all research I have done indicates it should be able to achieve speeds of 50mbps easily when used as an openvpn client.

I am going to try the SSL now and thank you both again.

You can also look at the stickied thread regarding your ISP specifically.

Hi! I'm using OpenVPN client on my Asus RT-N18U running DD-WRT. I use higher process priority/lower nice value in OpenVPN .conf file. For example, add nice -10 to OpenVPN conf. Feel free to experiment between 0 and -20, -20 being the highest priority. I don't recommend using -20, though. It hogs up cpu utilization from internal processes. I've noticed that too high priority might affect website loading speeds too but throughput is better, atleast for the single core RT-N18U.

I had Tomato on the R7000. You will not get high speeds with this router as a client. On my 100Mbit connection, it would max out around 25-30 on a good day. You need something like Pfsense to achieve good speeds (with AES-NI supported cpu) to get high throughput with openvpn as the router. Use the R7000 as a wireless AP behind Pfsense.

Just to round this off having tried everything I could think of with no joy I bought a Linksys WRT3200 ACM cheap from Maplins closing down sale set that up as the router with the R7000 as an access point and am now getting speeds of over 110mbs throughout the house. Thanks everyone for their help.
