I have had the 'unable to start PF firewall'  for a month now which means I cant have network lock. Also please check my post history as to what other solutions I have implemented (ie unchecking "Allow lan/private" and "Allow ping".

I have the better part of a year subscribed to AirVPN and I like it a lot and I WANT TO FIX THIS. PLEASE HELP ME

Try checking your password. The following line points at it as the problem.

E 2017.12.15 20:46:49 - OpenVPN > Error: private key password verification failed

Debugging is at least twice as hard as writing the program in the first place.

So if you write your code as clever as you can possibly make it, then by definition you are not smart enough to debug it.

Few things.

1. Thank you very much, this is very interesting.

2. I do not know what this means. Google search does not help me out. How do I solve this?

3. The password I use to login into this website and the Eddie client are both accepted.

4. Why the sudden change in 'private key password'? What changed? How did this happen and how can I prevent it?

Thank you again!

Well, I honestly have no idea what else could cause that line to appear in the log. I guess if the certificate was wrong it could happen, but you said you have been using it for a year, so this is very unlikely to be the case.

Anyone else happen to run into this sort of issue and have any suggestions? I am literally guessing as to the problem. Surely someone here can confirm if my guess would actually apply or not?

Interesting update!

I logged out and logged back into the Eddie client. Now instead of an endless loop of automatically disconnecting and trying to reconnect, it takes about 20 seconds to connect properly!

1. My usual time before this problem was about 5 seconds not 20. Any reason why this could be?

2. This is nonetheless the first time I have been able to use Eddie in about two months so I am considering this as a success for sure

3. As you might notice in the logs the client has 'updated' and this seems to have reset my preferences for 'lan private' and 'allow ping'. I have since unchecked these to allow Eddie to have 'network lock'

Heres my logs. Anything you can tell me about them would be very helpful and Im just very grateful for the help you guys have given so far!

Honestly I have no idea why it is now working. But I am certainly glad to hear that it is.

If I am understanding the new log, you may want to force IPv6 to disabled. It looks like it tried to enable it, then disabled it when it failed, then tried again and again failed and finally tried one last time without IPv6 and that is when it worked. This is not even remotely uncommon. Many ISPs, including mine claim to support IPv6, but in truth it plainly does not work for upwards of 90% of the Internet. But IPv4 does. And using IPv4 with Teredo tunneling allows you the benefit of both on an "IPv4 only" connection anyway.

I am not really a Mac person, but I am relatively certain they have Teredo installed by default. So you may not have to do anything but tell Eddie to disable IPv6. At the very least it will connect faster and if all else fails, you can unchange that if it messes things up for some reason.

Good luck my friend.

Debugging is at least twice as hard as writing the program in the first place.

So if you write your code as clever as you can possibly make it, then by definition you are not smart enough to debug it.

Ah I see. What is 'teredo' and 'teredo tunnelling' and how is it relevant? OR ALTERNATIVELY where is a good place to find out such information?

You have been very insightful! Many thanks

I’m sorry but I don’t understand why I should have to mess around with Teredo. Eddie clearly isn’t working properly with OSX and it is up to the software developers to fix it. I first complained about the ‘Unable to start PF Firewall’ problem over a month and a half ago and it still isn’t sorted. Come on guys, please do something about it!

P.S. This is the second time that I have posted this. My first try has disappeared!

Hello!

If you want professional help, why don't you submit a support ticket from the Client Area? These are just the ordinary forums.

Thanks LZ1 but I would have thought that the AirVPN staff would be well aware of the 'Unable to start PF Firewall' problem and have fixed it by now. Quite a few users have reported the problem so it's not just me.

No worries.

Yes I see you posted before, but it's a wonder then, why you didn't bump the aforementioned topic, since it contains more useful feedback.

Ideally, each of our problems would always be fixed within a short time, as we each feel they're the most pressing .

But multiple other problems are being dealt with at the same time in each update and some may be more critical than the problem you're currently facing.

You can for instance also see how they acknowledge the problem, as they in update 2.13.4 added this for MacOS:

[change] macOS - Dump additional info if PF failed to start.

Which could suggest it's not too easy to fix, because more information is needed.

The best you can do is to submit support tickets, try to get around the issue and post about any useful or interesting things you tried, much as others did in the aforementioned link.

Because one of the main things which enable Air to fix an issue, is to be able to replicate the issue on their own test machines, so they can see which fixes work and which don't.

Frankly, Mac users are a minority. That does not mean they do not matter, but there are so many more Linux and Windows users that fixing a bug for Mac is all but impossible at times. Especially if only a few of the already limited number of users experience it.

AirVPN does a very good job of fixing problems on all platforms, and I have no evidence this will ever change. But let me say the part no-one wants to hear. If you are not willing to seek support then you do not deserve a fix. (I know. I am a jerk.)

So please do consider seeking support directly from AirVPN. They want to help you, and will do so if they can. But they cannot know what issues you have until you tell them. As LZ1 said, this is the forums. Support is available here, but not the type you need if you still have the problem.

Here is the support you need. https://airvpn.org/contact/

And when you have a fix, please consider telling us about it here so we can share your fix with others. Have a nice day.

LZ1 I shall do as you suggest and submit a support ticket although I thought that someone had already done so which is why I can’t understand why there hasn’t been a fix.

OmniNegro, as I said above, I thought that someone had already submitted a ticket which is why I didn’t do so myself.

*Update - Support ticket now submitted.

Well there's a couple of reasons:

  • It shows Air's Staff how many many may be experiencing problem X.
  • Despite the fact that you experience the same as someone else, the actual causes may still be different. Hence detailed logs and so on, are necessary.
  • It shows Air's Staff how many may still be experiencing problem X after Y time. Say, after a patch.

The second point is particularly good to keep in mind, because when there's been many times in the past where many people experience issue X and they all proceed to post what could almost be called Tech's answer to #MeToo, in the main thread. Which means Air and the community can see that Y amount of people are experiencing X issue, but can't determine if they're all due to the same thing, happening on the same platform(s) and whatnot, because either few or no one supplied any detailed information on their setup or what they had each tried to do to fix the issue.

Moderators do not speak on behalf of AirVPN. Only the Official Staff account does. Please also do not run Tor Exit Servers behind AirVPN, thank you.

Well there's a couple of reasons:

LZ1 I shall do as you suggest and submit a support ticket although I thought that someone had already done so which is why I can’t understand why there hasn’t been a fix.

OmniNegro, as I said above, I thought that someone had already submitted a ticket which is why I didn’t do so myself.

*Update - Support ticket now submitted.

The 'Unable to start PF Firewall' problem has been ongoing for quite a while. I started a thread quit a while ago. A ticket was submitted by me and the logs info was passed on to the developers. They advised me they are working on it. It will hopefully be solved with the next upgrade which I read was going to be available within "weeks".

Yes, I reported the PF Firewall problem too, and I'm still hoping they can come up with a solution sooner rather than later. I have had to go back to an older version because I don't trust the security of the latest one - when I do get it going, even with Network Lock on leaks have been present. Unfortunately, the older version also has issues, where every so often it won't log me in and I have to quit and restart Eddie - sometimes this has to be done 3 or 4 times before it reconnects. Doing it once or twice is no big deal, but after a while it becomes frustrating and inconvenient. The thing is, until recently it had worked almost flawlessly on my Mac and I didn't do anything to change it. I liked Air so much I had already renewed for another year before all the problems hit.

And now there is also the problem connecting to the iPlayer, so all-in-all the last month has been rather disappointing.

Sorry to hear that you are also having problems with the older version of Eddie as well stookie. I'm lucky because it works fine for me.

It's interesting that you mention a problem connecting to iPlayer. When want to download a programme I have to use a different VPN as it doesn't work with AirVPN.
