I've tried both US and Canadian servers. Both had pings of 25-30 ms. Less than 25% capacity. I pay for 500/50 internet and typically pull around 400-600 Mb/s down, and 40-55 Mb/s up. On both servers, I've been pulling 30/10. I know there is some drop in speed expected.. but wow! 600 down to 30 is waaaaaaay more than I should be losing. I'm on macOS and using the Eddie software on automatic settings. New to VPN, so I'm not too sure what to attempt to configure.

Hello!

Welcome to AirVPN!

You can try going to the Eddie preferences and increasing the send and receive buffer sizes the Maximum 512kb. Likewise you can experiment with different server and protocol combinations . Try Netherlands.

I'd hope you didn't use your real name in your profile, as it appears.

Moderators do not speak on behalf of AirVPN. Only the Official Staff account does. Please also do not run Tor Exit Servers behind AirVPN, thank you.

Thanks for the reply. I set send/receive to 512.

No VPN: 395-415 Mb/s

UDP 443: 10 Mb/s

TCP 443: 20-25 Mb/s

UDP 1194: 15-25 Mb/s

I've also tried multiple servers, Netherlands included, and none were over 33% capacity. It seems like VPNs just don't like me. lol. I tried Nord too and had the same speed issues.

I had a lame inside network speed with just about every port but found UDP 2018 was better. Perhaps try a few more ports like UDP 53, 2018, etc? If you still have such a large discrepancy, try over SSL as well.

I am having same problem. I edited home/user/.airvpn/default.xml and changed Buffer size (both input and output) to 1048576 (1mb), as I could only get to 512kb using eddie UI.

I am using SSH 3891 and Netherland servers and I get almost 50Mb. Before these changes, using canadian servers, I only got to 20 Mb. My connection is a 400Mb, and reads that speed with no VPN.

Hello!

An additional information for those who need larger buffers when using Eddie: you can enter custom directives rcvbuf and sndbuf in "Preferences" > "OVPN Directives" custom directives field. Click "Save" after you have entered them and restart a connection to apply the change onto OpenVPN.

The syntax is:

rcvbuf receive_buffer_size

sndbf send_buffer_size

where receive_buffer_size and send_buffer_size are in bytes.

Example:

rcvbuf 1048576

will tell OpenVPN to create a 1 MB (1048575 bytes) receive socket buffer.

Kind regards

Hello! You are capped through traffic shaping. either enforced by yourself (check any filtering tool on your router and system) or more likely by your ISP.

Note how TCP is faster than UDP. This makes no sense in an agnostic network because OpenVPN is much faster in UDP, so it's a strong clue hinting to traffic shaping.

Test an "OpenVPN over SSL" connection to port 443 (a good approximation of HTTPS so to say), or a tls-crypt featured connection to entry-IP 3 or 4 to see whether they can mitigate or bypass the throttling techniques. Also consider to change ISP if possibile.

You can change connection mode in Eddie Preferences > Protocols. Remember to click "Save" and restart a connection each time you change setting to apply the change onto OpenVPN.

Kind regards

Are there any test suites or scripts that could be adapted to AirVPN's network (basically selecting a few AirVPN servers near and far) that automate testing various connection modes and parameters and spits out a network weather report?
