Windows 10 + AirVPN = Constant disconnections

Recommended Posts

I am running Windows 10.  I just installed the AirVPN client (v2.10.3).  Unfortunately, I keep getting disconnected after a couple of minutes of usage.  I'm not sure if "disconnection" is the right term since AirVPN still shows me connected but, I simply cannot browse any websites.  I keep trying different servers and they mostly seem to work but connectivity dies minutes later.

What could be the issue?

Hello !

Please provide logs.

Ha, I was just looking at your post.

Are you using Putty or the SSH protocol? When you go to your "Preferences" and then Protocols, is it set to "Automatic"?

Take a look at your TAP drivers too. On page 3 or so, there's links to the newest one as well.

Are you using any 3rd party firewall or networking software otherwise?

At the moment I have it on SSL Tunnel Port 443 because I couldn't get a working connection using Automatic.  I can connect to most servers BUT internet access seems to be intermittent.  For example, I can surf the web fine for 30 minutes, but then I can't do anything (e.g. check my company's webmail) for 5 minutes, which then forces me to disconnect and reconnect.  Overall it's just extremely unreliable and I have to disconnect/connect every time I use the computer.  Sometimes it's better than other times... for example, I can use the Internet for 2 hrs straight without problems.

I am not running any third party network control applications.  I am using Avast antivirus but only the free version that doesn't do anything other than scan files.

Also, I'm attaching a log as of now... (I just got to a point where I was still connected to a server but I couldn't do anything on the Internet).

Thanks.

It just happened again after I posted above... I switched the Protocols mode to Automatic and it worked for a while, but subsequently was unable to surf the web (although the AirVPN client still shows I'm connected).

So you didn't take a look at your TAP drivers as suggested?

Are you using any 3rd party firewall and/or antivirus software?

Have you tried different entry ports, besides SSL TCP Port 443? SSL can slow down your connection even more.

Have you tried checking your network adapters & making sure IPv4 & IPv6 are set to "Obtain automatically"? (Control Panel>Network & Internet>Network Connections)

It looks like you're still using the same drivers. TAP can be a major source of issues.  It's great you give me logs; although they're extremely long, but it's no use if you don't try out what's being suggested

I just tried following the instructions about replacing the TAP drivers.  I received the following error:

We are running on a 64-bit system.

Output folder: C:\Program Files\TAP-Windows\bin

Extract: devcon.exe... 100%

Output folder: C:\Program Files\TAP-Windows\driver

Extract: OemWin2k.inf... 100%

Extract: tap0901.sys... 100%

Output folder: C:\Program Files\TAP-Windows

Extract: license.txt... 100%

Extract: icon.ico... 100%

devcon.exe hwids returned: 0

TAP install (tap0901) (May require confirmation)

Updating drivers for tap0901 from C:\Program Files\TAP-Windows\driver\OemWin2k.inf.

devcon.exe failed.

devcon.exe returned: 2

devcon.exe cumulative status: 2

Created uninstaller: C:\Program Files\TAP-Windows\Uninstall.exe

Also, the instructions were very vague about how to uninstall the previous TAP drivers.  I uninstalled them using device manager but it also talks about some TAP software which I cannot locate.

Are you using any 3rd party firewall and/or antivirus software?

No

Yes.  I try whatever works.  I had just tried Port 443 because it was the last thing that worked.

Have you tried checking your network adapters & making sure IPv4 & IPv6 are set to "Obtain automatically"? (Control Panel>Network & Internet>Network Connections)

For whatever reason, I sometimes find this set to using a specific DNS server, which I assume is how AirVPN prevents DNS leakage.  When I shut down AirVPN and want to use the computer without VPN, I don't get connectivity until I revert this setting back to "obtain DNS server address automatically".  Otherwise, I leave it alone when using VPN.

You apparently didn't go through the thread, otherwise you'd notice one of my explanatory posts involving Revo Uninstaller.

Also, it's essential for Windows 10 to install TAP 9.9.2_3.exe. This is a signed driver.

Why doesn't the AirVPN software installer do all of this?  This is not very shrink wrapped for a commercial product.

Is there some other way to accomplish this without Revo Uninstaller?  I am prohibited from installing software that is not on a list of approved software.

Also, I am installing 9.9.1 because it was the first thing to do under "solution".  I didn't see anything referencing 9.9.2_3 reading from the top.

"SOLUTION:
Roll-back the TAP driver to 9.9.1 (tap-windows-9.9.1.exe) using the executable from this page: http://swupdate.openvpn.org/community/releases/"

The Air software can't do everything; especially when it comes to software that isn't directly under Airs control. Then there's the fact that peoples configurations are different and so therefore, for some, the existing drivers work fine. For others, they don't. But that doesn't stop Air from bundling certain drivers with downloads of their own software; the latest edition of Eddie comes with the most up to date TAP drivers after all. Maybe Ccleaner would be allowed on your system. If not, simply uninstalling normally and not using Revo can work too; giganerd just does it to be absolutely sure the drivers are gone and so therefore seeks to minimize issues. You'll have to do whatever is possible within the constraints of your specific situation. Maybe you can download the program to a USB stick and/or use portable versions that don't need to be installed or something. The main point is that you find a TAP driver which works for you.

Therefore the AirVPN software, which is not commercial software, contrarily to what you say, is in this list of approved software. We are so much pleased indeed.

The driver for Windows tun/tap interface comes from OpenVPN, not from us, because Windows lacks any driver for a tun/tap interface.

The Air software (Eddie) package comes bundled with the latest available driver from OpenVPN. No third-party drivers are currently considered. For example the current Eddie 2.11.2 beta includes, in its package, the new driver 9.21.2. It fixes some bugs affecting the previous driver. See also here:

Kind regards

giganerd just does it because he knows no uninstaller this side of the moon will remove folders and regkeys.

I notified the user back in May, he didn't login since posting it. And since I'm not a moderator I cannot change what is there. I know, it's uncomfortable. We just noticed in the process afterwards that 9.9.1 does not work with Windows 10.
