New Country: Brazil (BR) - New 1 Gbit/s server available
puccettone and one other reacted to Staff for a post in a topic
Hello! We're very glad to inform you that a new 1 Gbit/s server located in São Paulo, BR, is available: Peony. Peony is our first server in South America and we are very proud to start operating there. Special thanks go to out moderator Zhang who helped us find a datacenter with particularly good connectivity The AirVPN client will show automatically the new server. If you use the OpenVPN client you can generate all the files to access it through our configuration/certificates/key generator (menu "Client Area"->"Config generator"). The server accepts connections on ports 53, 80, 443, 1194, 2018 UDP and TCP. Just like every other "second generation" Air server, Peony supports OpenVPN over SSL and OpenVPN over SSH, TLS 1.2 and tls-crypt. Full IPv6 support is included as well. As usual no traffic limits, no logs, no discrimination on protocols and hardened security against various attacks with separate entry and exit-IP addresses. You can check the server status as usual in our real time servers monitor: https://airvpn.org/servers/peony Do not hesitate to contact us for any information or issue. Kind regards and datalove AirVPN Team -

1 point@zhang888 That's correct, in the European Union cooperating with a private entity in an attempt to disclose and transmit personal data (including an IP address, which is recognized under specific circumstances as "personal data") is a borderline operation which may configure civil and even criminal infringements. The transmission of personal data between private companies without the explicit and informed consent of the data subject is a serious infringement in every EU country. Just for information or curiosity, in Italy the attempt to disclose a person's identity through IP addresses harvesting and request to the provider (ISP in general, proxy, VPN...) has been recognized as an illegal act, which must be rejected, in the so called "Peppermint affair", a long dispute between 2005 and 2010, which ended with a resounding defeat of all copyright trolls. One of central roles defending the interests of the citizens whose identities could have been disclosed according to the improper or illegal requests of copyright trolls was covered by lawyer Carlo Blengino, who has been a source of inspiration to protect privacy and personal data for an AirVPN founder throughout the years, inspiration that is one of the leading AirVPN creation reasons. https://www.altalex.com/documents/news/2010/03/24/caso-peppermint-la-riservatezza-delle-comunicazioni-prevale-sul-diritto-d-autore Kind regards

Reverse class action lawsuit
amazeballs reacted to zhang888 for a post in a topic
This thread should be soon moved to Off-topic. There are no "class action" or "reverse class action" or any classy actions that can be enforced on you, when you use a VPN correctly. And this is not only limited to AirVPN but to all VPN providers who at least claim not to keep logs. The only action a real VPN provider will respond to such copyright requests is a "reverse cowgirl" statement. Technically, when you use torrent software over a VPN tunnel correctly (i.e. no leaks and no one-offs without VPN) your traffic is being fully encrypted by the VPN tunnel, and there are no known counter measures to determine which user was behind the VPN server. And a log-less VPN provider will forward all the DMCA requests to a special location in Unix systems called /dev/null. Or if to be more polite, a statement that the server behind this IP serves thousands of users. Actually, one of the reasons "good" VPN providers have locations in countries like U.S. is a pre-agreed "quota" of abuse complaints regarding DMCA, where both the data-center and the leasing entity (AirVPN in this case) both know that the servers are going to be offered to the public, where a possible violation of "copyrights" may occur on some specific manners. Of course, if you want to help Air with the mission - please avoid illegal Torrent activity from U.S. servers. This a request, not a demand. The way to do it right is to produce actual, non-logged activity, such as - this month the server ran 500TB of data, out of it was only 1% of copyrighted one - where it is somewhat acceptable. As I mentioned earlier this week - the more abuse (DMCA) complaints some datacenters will receive, the less likelihood the datacenter will want to provide upstream to providers like AirVPN. So the less complaints you, as a community, can generate, the more freedom you and other users can have in the future. Rarely any VPN provider will cooperate with such copyright trolls, because it will basically mean a public statement that they cannot protect their users privacy. Since I'm not a lawyer probably Staff (Paolo) can share the official legal terms. -
1 pointI have been a member for almost 3 years, and everyday i check the forums and i have never read anyone complaining they got a lawsuit or a warning while using Airvpn.... You can search the forums and make sure.

1 pointHi corrado, Regarding the DropDown Add/update provider on my v0.6.2 only showing Air, Mullvad and PIA, I compared the local and github qomui_service.py files and noticed that my local file only showed the three Supported providers mentioned above so I deleted the /usr/local/lib/python3.6/dist-packages/qomui and /usr/local/lib/python3.6/dist-packages/qomui-0.5.1.egg-info directories, since I thought /usr/local/lib/python3.6/dist-packages/qomui-0.5.1.egg-info should be updated too. Then tried installing over-top and removing via symantic qomui completely and re-installing v0.6.2 (.deb) but those directories were not created with the install. I also tried v0.5.1 and 0.6.1 (didn't bother trying v0.6.0) since I have the .deb files but nothing created the /usr/local/lib/python3.6/dist-packages/ directories. I had to run the github source installation before the two directories were created. git clone https://github.com/corrad1nho/qomui.git cd ./qomuisudo python3 setup.py install So it looks like installing the .deb either over-top or as a fresh install doesn't update/create the /usr/local/lib/python3.6/dist-packages/ directories. Now all is good with the extra three providers listed, I just thought you'd like to know. Cheers

1 pointOpenvpn 2.4.6 - maybe it's the manual editing of the ip address in the config file that causes the issue? Can you try again with the unchanged one - in my case qomui resolved it automatically without any issue?

IPv6 support and new smart features
LeonPcourn reacted to Staff for a post in a topic
Hello! It involves MAC address of the tun interface too, not only TAP. We don't see it as a privacy hazard and we think that you don't even need to spoof it, it's just a MAC of a virtual interface which is lost when packets get out of our servers. Our servers already know your IPv6 address during the connection, which is a much more sensitive information. And we really need push-peer-info to discern whether a VPN server should push IPv6 routes and gateway or not when a user connects with an arbitrary software different than the AirVPN specific software. It is essential for us because, as you know, it's paramount for us that any user has the freedom to connect with any OpenVPN based software. Kind regards -
1 pointDozens of reports throughout 2014 and 2015 show that in Virgin network DNS poisoning is (probably intermittently) used against https://airvpn.org Solution: use a publicly accessible, not poisoned DNS, for example OpenNIC https://opennicproject.org or contact us to know alternative domain names to access various https front ends in our infrastructure.
-
1 pointTake a look at 3rd point in my tutorial. After you do that, you need to forward ports on your router, but if that worked before, I guess you already forwarded your ports. Then you only need to connect to your REAL IP (IP given by your ISP), not AirVPN IP address and it will work.

1 pointHi Mikeyy, sorry for the delay. Before your answer I did figure out a restart myself. And that got things going. But my forum message was still not approved, so I couldn't alter it. So in the end I managed to download stuff via DS Get via VPN. But all of my webservices were not reachable anymore. I read about that before hand, but thought a bit too optimisticly. After reading up on it, I got scared whether I would be able to have a VPN and run my webservices at the same time. I would need passthrough of: -torrents -IMAP -SMTP -POP3 -webinterface of synology To be honest I am afraid that I am not capable enough to make all those things work.

1 pointHi, I have followed this guide and tried both a specific netherlands server and netherlands in general but the DSM keeps returning error (in screenshot). Can someone please help me? I am not sure where i can find more detailed logs in the synology so please assist with this if this will help getting it resolved. Thank you in advance
-
1 pointWow, good idea! Will add it. Not sure why you added other part? If VPN is off, current script will start it (when cronjob runs). If VPN is ON, but it's in error state (not letting traffic trough) it will kill VPN and start it again. EDIT: Added your contribution to tutorial. Changed some parts of tutorial. You no longer need to copy script to /usr/ folder. It's better if it stays in shared folder of your choice since there it will survive system upgrades.
-
1 pointYes, this happens to me also, but I didn't notice it until now since I almost never reboot my NAS, and I have reconnect script which detects that VPN isn't working and restart it. I think this is Synology VPN implementation bug, it should be reported to them. Hopefully they can fix it in new updates.

Tor > AirVPN, How can I setup a Network Lock (Killswitch)
Flette reacted to fish-for-all for a post in a topic
I thought so, but it doesn't work unfortunatelly. May is it possibe to configure this by hand? Hello, it is indeed possible to make Network Lock working with AirVPN over Tor. It's currently not planned but it might be implemented in the future. Eddie already talks with Tor control to get the IP addresses of the Tor guards. This is necessary to set the proper routes and avoid the infinite route loop problem (so the user does not need any middle box). The circuit is fixed for the OpenVPN stream, so no additional problems should arise. Kind regards -

1 pointWe cross-checked the reports of dozens of our customers with Virgin Media UK, asking them to resolve "airvpn.org" on two of Virgin DNS servers. Since all the reports matched exactly throughout one year, we can safely assume that the reports are reliable. It is also worth mentioning that DNS poisoning of airvpn.org is intermittent, and when contacted directly about the issue, Virgin Media responded to us that it was a technical problem, totally unintentional. How are we supposed to know? All in all even the cyber workers of the government of China are interested in our web site, not only with DNS poisoning but also IP blocking. Who knows, maybe it's really just an obscure technical error that re-occurs periodically. Kind regards
-
1 pointAssuming you mean Virgin Media UK. How did you determine this? Why would they mess with DNS to the web site rather than routing to the actual OpenVPN servers? Its a nice web site but not even that important to AirVPN users who only actually need it for initial setup. This is a curiosity only question as the solution of using an alternative DNS doesn't seem to have any downsides.
-
1 pointAfter a bit more thought and checking the Eddie log, airvpn uses it's own DNS lookup at 10.5.0.1 to avoid "DNS leaks". Not a Windows systems programmer, but there seems to be a need to handle "window close" or "terminate process" signals from the OS, perhaps the problem is in the delegation to OpenVPN. Perhaps Eddie could store away original non-vpn config in $HOME/.x, and offer a "Recover IP config" menu option when Not Connected ?

There is a functional issue with quick connect: I added one server to the list of favorites. When tapping the quick connect button, it logs me in. A second tap tells me the end of the server list was reached, the button turns blue and connecting is not possible at all. Only force-closing the app fixes it. Looking through all the strings in the app I've also found a few smaller issues in both of my translations. They are already fixed in code. Maybe a clarification to the quick connect thing: I'm located in Germany (of course ) and I added Kitalpha (CH) to rule out the golden rule discussed a few posts prior. I also tried disabling it. -
0 pointsF***, you are right. But I have an idea why this happens. I actually tested with fresh installs on three systems, don't know how I could have missed that. Expect a fix soon! I'm not seeing this issue but although I upgraded from 0.6.0 to 0.6.1 using .deb files, I don't see the extra providers, just air, pia and mullvad. 'About' says 0.6.1 but something doesn't look quit right.

How-to: AirVPN on Synology DSM6 and DSM7 complete guide
Richardren reacted to faethon for a post in a topic
I just started tinkering with VPN on my Synology as well. I have set it up succesfully using the above guide. But I have some connections that need to go around the VPN as well (mainly SSL connections to usenet servers). I have created a passthrough by adding static routes to the routing table in the Synology configuration that explicitly go to the specific usenet server (ranges). This seems to work quite well, but of course is not useful if the IP address of the destination servers do change. -

First of all: Thanks a lot for your great work, Mikeyy! I followed your instructions to set up a vpn client by using the ovpn file. There's one strange thing: When the DSM is rebooted the client starts automatically, but it does not fully establish the routing table. I have to stop it and start it again to get it work. --> pics left to right. Any ideas what the reason could be? Greets -

0 pointsHello! The "Exclude" tick might or might not work properly (it works as a NOT operator), it depends on your configuration. Probably the most straightforward way is switching from your "Custom Policy" (when connected to the VPN) to "Safe Mode" (when you want connectivity without the VPN), because to do that you just need to right-click on the Comodo dock icon. Kind regards
