Eddie Desktop 2.24 beta released

Recommended Posts

There was talk about the AirVPN Suite getting a GUI client for Bluetit named Firecrest.
But then again, there was even older talk about Eddie 3. I am not sure anymore what info is still current.
In recent months we've seen Eddie for Android 3.0 release and work on AirVPN Suite 2.0, plus work on Cuckoo for the AirVPN Suite. I don't think a rewrite is doable in terms of time. I mean, there is evident struggle in even making the various vague release date statements that pop out from time to time here and there.. it's comparable to Valve time. :D

During this conversation Microsoft has donated the entire Mono Framework to the developers of WINE. It will take time to understand if this will work out for a good multiplatform strategy.

Microsoft Offloads The Mono Project To Wine:
https://www.phoronix.com/news/Microsoft-Gives-Mono-To-Wine

27 of August

Coming as a surprise this afternoon is Microsoft deciding to contribute the Mono Project to be stewarded by the Wine development community.

Although i must say it did not come as a surprise, and offloading the Mono development does have considerable bearing on the Wine development team. The good news is that it now is time for optimizing the Mono Framework. But in my experience, OpenJDK or even a Java application works so much faster. The problem with Java is that Microsoft created .NET to push Java out of the market and that it still is unreasonable to expect Microsoft Windows users to install a Java Runtime Machine instead of just having another .NET application. So many Windows applications rely on the .NET framework installed anyhow.

Anyway, the moratorium has passed, and it is now allowed to let people know that .NET applications for Linux or Mac or anything other than Windows is now open to use in source, and in binary. However Microsoft explained that there is 4 years left for using the Mono Runtime Machine as is for e.g. people using this framework, and Eddie Client is one of it.

This does in fact mean that the developers of Eddie have 4 years to postpone a difficult decision.

I really hope the WINE development team is able to make the MONO RUNTIME MACHINE a lot FASTER. Since it now is property of the Wine is not an Emulator team.

@Staff When can we expect a new version (UI / dark theme) and or stable release for Windows OS. Please don't forget about us, as 2.24 was released on Feb/26/2024. It seems lately the focus is on Android and Linux OS.
Thanks for taking Win users into consideration. 😉

New version, mainly bug fixes, to promote it to Stable as soon as possible.

A completely revamped version of the UI, no longer based on Mono (for Linux) and Xamarin (for MacOS), is in development, but we cannot currently estimate a release date.

[bugfix] [all] CPU usage optimization
[change] [all] OpenVPN 2.6.12
[bugfix] [all] Various minor fixes
[change] [all] Fine-tuning of Network Lock IPv6 rules (Private & Translation)

GTK?
And it doesn't sound like Firecrest. So is work being done simultaneously on both "Eddie-ng" and Firecrest, the GUI for Bluetit?

[bugfix] [linux] Hide window when minimized to tray

Minimize in tray now finally works without the GUI going transparent in Xfce/Xubuntu! There's still a little issue, when Eddie is minimized in tray and you click the tray icon and choose "Preferences" or "About" the main window again is completely transparent, you then must click either on the connection or the Show Main Window buttons in the tray to bring the main window back to normal.
Also the sluggishness of the GUI when browsing through Eddie and it's settings which started with 2.24 is still there, at least on my "bare metal" laptop Xubuntus. Windows workstation's Virtualbox Xubuntu has no lagginess or considerably less.

Edit:
Regarding the slowness now that i tested 2.21.8 and a regular Ubuntu liveUSB it's pretty much the same, so I think it's just the laptops hardware showing it's age. Maybe the next software could be more efficient in that sense since I do not notice similar sluggishness on other graphical applications on the same oldish laptops.

In regards to this:
I confirm that after installing 2.24.3 on my two machines, Eddie process CPU usage stays at 0-0.1% when in background.
Thanks for releasing a fix :)

Unable to connect to server via WireGuard using the portable GUI version (Windows, x64)
What I did:

  1. Downloaded the zip
  2. Extracted it to a folder
  3. Copied the default.profile from the older version to the new location
  4. Started the new Eddie-GUI
  5. Tried to connect to a server in LA.
  6. Fails, keeps retrying.
  7. Prior beta version (2.23.1) works fine with same server.
Error in the log:
. 2024.11.08 19:57:47 - Elevated: Command:wireguard
. 2024.11.08 19:57:47 - WireGuard > Setup start
E 2024.11.08 19:57:47 - WireGuard > Error: Failed to start: The system cannot find the file specified.
. 2024.11.08 19:57:47 - WireGuard > Stopping
. 2024.11.08 19:57:47 - WireGuard > Completed

Not sure what file it's looking for. If that was also in the log, it would have been helpful 😀

WireGuard will not connect to the server.  Version 2.24.3 on Window 11.  OpenVPN connects with no problems. Installed version 2.24.2 with WireGuard and OpenVPN connecting with no problems.  The logs mention a missing file when trying to connect to WireGuard.  I noticed that the 2.24.3 file is smaller than the 2.24.2 file. Possibly a file did not make it in to the package.  My 2.24.3 logs follow.

2.24.3 is running great on Mint 22!  I have it running vpn chains without any issues at all so far!

FYI - even the VM's running Eddie are snappy.  I do have 20 Gig and 6 processors on any VM setting though.  Lucky to have great hardware.

I have "Don't ask elevation every run" enabled.
After starting 2.24.3 for the first time, the connection to the server could not be established.
From log: "Hummingbird > Error: Exception: Executable '/Applications/Eddie.app/Contents/MacOS/hummingbird' not allowed: Not owned by root;"

Solution:
I disabled the "Don't ask elevation every run". Shutdown Eddie.
Restarted Eddie. Enabled the "Don't ask elevation every run". macOS now asks for Admin password. Shutdown Eddie.
Restarted Eddie. Everything fine.

I run my Eddie network lock config set on automatic.  My systems all run full NFT, and such is enabled at boot by my personal system default settings.  Eddie simply sets those rules aside when mounted and places my personal ruleset back when I exit Eddie.  I don't see where that would create a vulnerability I am concerned about.  If so I would love to know what/how?

Can't answer for Mac folks, but for those running Deb variants 2.24.3 is smooth on my end!  I am playing around with 3 vpn servers on a single chain all running on Eddie and not a hitch!  Little speed loss of course but that is through 3 separate countries.

This bug is an issue with Mono on Linux, and there’s not much we can do. A UI without Mono is in the works.

Yes, there is a bug on Linux with the NetworkLock when the OS has iptables-legacy instead of clean iptables or nftables. This issue affects several Arch users. It will be fixed in version 2.24.4, which we will release today or tomorrow.

We cannot reproduce this issue right now.
Seem a problem with a security check that we implemented recently.
Disable "Don't ask elevation every run" and re-enable rebuild the check, for this @deltaman8 seem resolve the issue.
I think it's related to migration between version, but again is still under investigation. Please @spinmaster tell us if you resolve with disable & re-enable the launchd service mode. Thanks.

On first startup Eddie 2.24.4 asked immediately for Admin Password and everything was fine.
(I remember now: Every new version asked for Password on very first start. 2.24.3 did not. Maybe that was the problem?)

@Staff
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks for your efforts in resolving the issues related to third-party .ovpn files in the recent release.
And I truly appreciate the consideration given to this matter.

However, I wanted to bring to your attention an observation regarding the recent releases 2.24.3 and 2.24.4 (Windows 10 64-bit)
It appears that the application is not correctly detecting the exit IP when using third-party .ovpn files.
In contrast, the exit IP detection seems to function properly with WireGuard configuration files.

Despite the absence of the exit IP display during the establishment of the VPN connection via the third-party .ovpn file,
I am pleased to report that internet connectivity is indeed functional.
I verified the active IP through https://ipleak.net, and it shows as expected, indicating that the VPN connection is working correctly.

I hope this feedback proves useful as you continue to refine the VPN client.
Thank you once again for your commitment to improving our experience.

Hi @Clodo, I tried the "fix" from @deltaman8 after updating to 2.42.4. Something is really weird:

When I set the checkbox for "Don't ask elevation every run":

SCR-20241116-rvjc.thumb.png.20d222ef863e6e248f7499362add4c8d.png

after clicking "save" - it seems to be saved (= 2 seconds spinning beachball), but when I go back to settings, the checkbox is all of a sudden unchecked again, so it seems it is not saved at all:

SCR-20241116-rvux.thumb.png.e7d26aa109572890b624c80b00267714.png

It does not matter if I quit and restart Eddie (tried that too), the checkbox is not checked after clicking "save". As a result, I cannot connect at all as Eddie remains in that endless connection attempt loop as described earlier.

Whatever security check was recently introduced, it may be related.

There is no difference between OpenVPN and WireGuard when calculating the IP Exit (if non-airvpn profiles are used).
I cannot reproduce the issue; I always get an IP Exit with both OpenVPN and WireGuard using Eddie 2.24.4, Linux Mint, and NordVPN profiles.

Can you confirm if it’s systematic, or does it occasionally manage to detect it? Thanks.
I’ll take note of the issue, but if I manage to reproduce it, it will likely be fixed in future versions. For now, the priority is to release a stable version, even with this minor issue.
