ANSWERED [Android] Eddie: OpenVPN3 KEEPALIVE_TIMEOUT

Hey,

I'm a new user and having problems with Eddie on Android 10 (Pixel 3XL). Connection gets locked like 10 times a day with this error message:

OpenVPN3 KEEPALIVE_TIMEOUT: Eddie Library Session invalidated: KEEPALIVE_TIMEOUT

I have to disconnect and reconnect manually and there is no connectivity at all until I do it. I disabled battery optimization but it didn't help. At this point it's kind of frustrating and I still have 3 years to go with my subscription. Anyone have any ideas?

Hello!

That's an unrecoverable error and, when "VPN lock" is enabled, Eddie correctly locks communications to prevent any possible traffic leak outside the VPN tunnel. If Eddie tried to re-connect when the network is again up, traffic would flow outside the VPN tunnel.

Now, starting from Android 9, a robust traffic leaks prevention is implemented at system level, in a way that Eddie can't achieve as it lacks privileges. The "VPN Lock" feature, after the bootstrap of the device, is no more necessary when Android is properly set up.

So you can consider to turn off "VPN lock" from Eddie's settings, and turn on "Always on VPN" and "Block connections without VPN tunnel" in Android settings.

In this way Eddie will re-connect whenever possible and you will not suffer traffic leaks between a disconnection and a re-connection.
