Cinnamon Panel Integration or Alternatives

Is there a panel applet or similar feature for Cinnamon (or any other DE) like Mullvad has? Ideally I'd like to use the built-in network manager applet, but I've read that it's not recommended to use the network manager at all. Any other recommendations for minimalistic interfaces would be appreciated as well. Anything other than just leaving Eddie open in the background.

Upgrading to eddie beta, 2.14.2 at this point in time, allows the app to minimize to the tray, work very nice for me on Mint 18.3 cinnamon.

To get one of the most minimalistic interfaces you can run Eddie in command line mode or OpenVPN directly under screen. Such a setup does not even require any graphical environment. About screen utility:
