Erratic UDP or TCP that max's out at 8Mbit ??

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am trying to fine tune my connection.

If I connect using TCP the connection is much smoother (and usable) but the speed hits a ceiling of around 8Mbit/s both up and down (my connection is 45 up, 9 down).

When I move over to UDP the connection is so erratic that it is mostly unusable but at times I get 20Mbit/s down, 7Mbit/s up.

I have improved my latency by using a DNS server that isn't by AirVPN. AirVPN was around 70-120ms ping, now I get 50-60ms.

I understand a bit about the difference between UDP and TCP, so my questions are;

- Can I improve my speed through TCP?

- Anything I can try, to improve the stability of UDP?

- You recommend 'Europe' or 'Asia' etc. server on the config page, does this connect me to the fastest/least congested server from that region each time or is it totally random?

Kind regards,

Hello!

Generally not. Please see https://airvpn.org/faq/udp_vs_tcp

Since you report that you have erratic perfomance, we can rule out ISP traffic shaping. Logs taken after a couple of hours of a connection could help to determine whether the problem is caused by packet loss and/or packet fragmentation (in which case it is possible to intervene) or not. Also, this behavior (performance with wide oscillations) is typically experienced in low-signal WiFi connections and high latency connections, such as satellite connections.

The recommended server is the server with the highest rating determined as the outcome of a formula which includes parameters such as available bandwidth, server status, server packet loss to/from all the other Air nodes, latency to/from all the other Air nodes.

Kind regards
