ANSWERED AirVPN - TOR - WEB issue

Recommended Posts

Hello guys.

Only recently a customer of AIRVPN's and I would love some help on getting AirVPN - TOR - INTERNET working,.

I have already got TOR - AirVPN - WEB working (by connecting the AirVPN, then loading Tor Browser, and then using TOR browser)

But When I load TOR Browser, (the proxy inside Vidalia proxy is 9150 in my setup), and then configure AirVPN to use port 9150 SOCKS I get the following error inside the AirVPN software:

05/11/2013 - 12:16    Login...
05/11/2013 - 12:16    Login success.
05/11/2013 - 12:16    Contacting service...
05/11/2013 - 12:16    Connecting...
05/11/2013 - 12:16    OpenVPN 2.3.2 x86_64-w64-mingw32 [sSL (OpenSSL)] [LZO] [PKCS11] [eurephia] [iPv6] built on Aug 22 2013
05/11/2013 - 12:16    Socket Buffers: R=[8192->8192] S=[8192->8192]
05/11/2013 - 12:16    Attempting to establish TCP connection with [AF_INET]127.0.0.1:9150
05/11/2013 - 12:16    TCP connection established with [AF_INET]127.0.0.1:9150
05/11/2013 - 12:16    recv_socks_reply: Socks proxy returned bad reply
05/11/2013 - 12:16    SIGTERM[soft,init_instance] received, process exiting
05/11/2013 - 12:16    Failed to start.

And the following error inside the TOR Vidalia proxy software;

Nov 05 12:16:47.749 [Warning] socks5: command 3 not recognized. Rejecting.
Nov 05 12:16:47.749 [Warning] Fetching socks handshake failed. Closing.

Could you please help me, I cannot find an answer to this solution and would much prefer to use the VPN software over TOR to brwose the internet as I believe its much more secure.

Thank you in advance

Hello.

Thank you for this, it has solved the problem.

One more question please, I have reconfigured the TOR browser to work without using a proxy so I can use it directly through the VPN which is connected through TOR. Is the Java security risk still an issue with this setup? So with VPN-TOR-WEB could my real IP still be leaked through java?

Thanks

Hello,

theoretically yes, Java applets can read all the system network cards. If your system is behind another NAT (for example a router) your real IP address is not included on any of the network cards so the risk is minimal. However, some other potential security issues must be taken into consideration, so make sure to run always the latest available Java version, and disable Java every time it is not strictly necessary (which should not be a big deal, since Java usage on the www has shrunk a lot in the last years).

To some readers: Java must not to be confused with Javascript, they are totally different things.

Kind regards
