Only want to use for Torrents..

Recommended Posts

I finally decided to try out AirVPN. Like a lot of others I only want to use this for torrents. I did start reading a post on how to set it up for that in Windows 7, but man was that post long. I hate to read. Isn't there an easier way to go about things?

I assume you mean the guide I wrote?

https://airvpn.org/topic/9549-guide-to-setting-up-vpn-just-for-torrenting-on-windows-thanks-to-nadre/

If there is an easier way, I don't know what it is.

That guide is mostly pictures.

And it is not just a recipe. It attempts to explain enough about networking to give the reader some hope of trouble shooting the set up if they make an error. Or modify the scheme described there to suit themselves. And be able to check that AirVPN and their final set up is working in the way they believe it is.There are are a lot of fly by night VPN operators out there where just having blind faith that it is protecting you the way you want it to would be very unwise.

If all of this is already familiar to you, you can just skip over it. If not, then you would be well advised (IMO) to take this opportunity to learn a bit about it.

Try this guide: https://airvpn.org/faq/p2p/

I appreciate your guide,  but it went way over my head to say the least I think people just needed a simple 1,2,3 step process of setting up the most easiest torrent client with AirVPN.  Your guide naturally works best once it is fully up and running.

I think all these guides on getting the best from AirVPN are great however I have quickly discovered other VPN providers give options in there software to "Stop internet activity if VPN drops"  or "Prevent DNS leaks from occuring"

Its nice to just be able to click tick and walk away with peace of mind.  I wish these options were present I love AirVPN and recommend it over anything else but I may have to consider other options,  wish the guides on here were more simple and straight forward like 1,2,3,4 process but its clear you need to be pretty technical and I.T savvy !

The desire to be able to use the real IP address for most activities while using the VPN for torrenting is what forces the complexity. If you can live without that, then some other posts I have made that are much shorter and more recipe-like may be helpful. These all still use the OpenVPN-GUI program rather than the AirVPN client. The same information is in a few posts:

Hello,

if you don't need to split traffic just start the p2p client after you have connected to a VPN server.

That's trivial and requires one minute, but yuppicide seemed to ask a very different thing, that is splitting traffic on an application basis, which has nothing to do with the options you cite. Maybe yuppicide can clarify if that was (or not) the meaning of the question.

Kind regards

Thanks will keep those links in mind,  everyone does seem to have different setups and needs so it does get rather complex.

It would still be lovely to have those features within the AirVPN client,  just makes it the ultimate friendly really but I see the point it makes sense to be better protected and secure with firewall and other setups in place.

@Royee

Yes, actually they are planned in Eddie, the next client release for Windows, Linux+Mono and OS X. Traffic splitting is not planned though.

At this point it's unclear whether you need leaks prevention or traffic splitting. The first will take just one minute configuration, the latter can be very simple or quite complex according to how you wish to split traffic (for example, the NaDre solution, which at the beginning seemed what you needed, will take just a couple of minutes - not considering basic network knowledge acquisition, that vary of course, but the guide is in itself a good lesson/course on the matter as well).

Kind regards

First off, I don't mean to say anyone's posts suck. I just have a problem with reading. I hate it. I did go to school for networking, but a month before I was due to graduate they went bankrupt! So, while I do have some knowledge, a lot of it went out the door since when I was studying this stuff it was oh 12 or 13 years ago.

But anyway, I'm smart enough to be a quick learner.

Traffic splitting is probably what I want to do. I want to download something while playing a game. Game obviously uses my real IP because I don't have to worry or want any slow downs.

I honestly do not use the service as much as some others here, so it's not that big of a deal. I just need to remember to turn it back on.
