Port Forwarding, Transmission & a Rasp Pi

Hello All.

 

I have a problem with port forwarding to the transmission daemon on my raspberry Pi....I have been trying to get it to work for a few days now and have finally given in and decided to post on the forum....

 

The steps I have gone through are:

1. Pick a random port number (e.g. 54567)
2. Configure port forwarding on router using that port and to the IP address of my raspberry Pi.
3. Go to client area and forward a port on the server I connect to (using the port number I selected in step 1, entered into the local port number box)
4. Use the generated port number in the "incoming port number" in the transmission options.
5. Close & restart the transmission daemon.

No matter what I try the port never seems to open, checking with the "test port" feature in the transmission GUI.

 

I would like to point out that I am a novice with linux and the raspberry pi.

 

Any advice would be great and sorry in advance if I have not posted enough info......

Hello!

 

The error might lie in point 3. You can't remap ports with torrent clients, because the torrent clients will notify the peers and the trackers of the port number which is configured in the client itself. If that port does not match with the port to be reached on the public IP address, your torrent client can't be contacted.

 

A clarification: is OpenVPN running on the router where Rapsberry is connected to? If so, has a DNAT been configured on that router according to our guide, to properly forward packets to the Rapsberry device?

I have openVPN running on my Raspberry Pi, with an automatic configuration file generated by the AirVPN generator tool (changing the extension to .conf).  The Pi connects through the VPN no problem, I have checked the external IP on the Pi and it is the same as the one in the client area.

 

I guess I have the information all backwards in my mind   , I am trying to self teach all this stuff, including the linux......

 

So I guess I need to clarify which port numbers to use where...

 

So I will need to generate a forwarded port (not filling in any of the boxes) in the client area and then use this port number in the torrent client.....and that's it.?  No need to forward anything on my router.?

Hi, 

 

I have a working configuration with transmission and my Pi and can help you.

 

- In transmission webui, do not tick "Use port forwarding from router"

- In your router DO NOT open any ports

 

 

In your AirVPN client area:

 

In "Forwarded Ports"

 

Set listening port of transmission

Protocol: TCP & UDP

Local port: same as above

DDNS:

Thanks for the input Denver, I have modified the settings as you suggested and the port now seems to be open (when doing port test in Transmission GUI) 

 

The trackers for the torrent files still say they cannot connect though....am I missing something, as I thought opening the port would resolve the issue.?

 

Are the IP tables only required as a backup if the VPN drops out.?

I have set up the port forwarding in the same way through transmission and I also seem to have trackers failing to connect. It also seems like I have much less peers connecting and a slower download speed with this set up. As soon as I switch back to no port forwarding through AirVPN, then I have good speed and lots of peers/trackers... So maybe I am missing something here too.
