  1. Dear @all, my Asus Router RT-AC88U - flashed with current Merlin Beta-Firmware 380.67_alpha2 - is configured to run as AirVPN OpenVPN-Client. ccording to the following AirVPN HowTo: https://airvpn.org/asuswrt/ After importing AirVPN's *.ovpn config-file, I modified the following OpenVPN client-parameters in the advanced settings section (my suggestion to everyone):Accept DNS Configuration (AirVPN -> Disabled): Should be "Strict" (recommended) or alternatively to "Exclusive"Redirect Internet traffic (AirVPN -> No): Should be set to "all", to be sure, that every traffic will be forwarded through the VPN-tunnelI added "mute-replay-warnings" to the custom configuration field. So, now AirVPN-client connection is up and vpn connection via the router is running successfully. In addition to that, I'd like to use the OpenVPN-server of the above mentioned router, to enable secure remote access to my home network (NAS, Samba-Shares, Printers etc.) - from the road (when I'm not at home) - using my mobile phone or my Laptop. So I startet with the configuration of OpenVPN-server 1. Sample for Advanced Config: see attached image After saving the configuration, I startet the router's export and imported the generated *.ovpn-file to my client devices OpenVPN-installation. Then I configured an open port using the "remote port forwarding"-feature of AirVPN's client-backend, in order to enable TCP/UDP-Traffic to my local OpenVPN-Server port (e.g. 1149) using a predifined ddns-alias (like XXXXX.airdns.org). So for example Airvpn port 50000 directs to local port 1149 (TCP + UDP). Unfortunaltely I got now stuck with building up any connection from the clients. The DNS-resolution of AirVPN works correctly (client receives correct OpenVPN-Server IP), but the OpenVPN-Client (version 1.1.1 build 212 - 64-bit on iPhone)) ends with connection_timeout. iPhone's OpenVPN-client Log-File (anonymized): 2017-06-11 02:07:16 ----- OpenVPN Start ----- OpenVPN core 3.1.2 ios arm64 64-bit built on Dec 5 2016 12:50:25 2017-06-11 02:07:16 Frame=512/2048/512 mssfix-ctrl=1250 2017-06-11 02:07:16 UNUSED OPTIONS 2017-06-11 02:07:16 EVENT: RESOLVE 2017-06-11 02:07:16 Contacting 46.165.XXX.XXX:YYYYY via TCP 2017-06-11 02:07:16 EVENT: WAIT 2017-06-11 02:07:16 SetTunnelSocket returned 1 2017-06-11 02:07:16 Transport Error: TCP connect error on 'XXXXXX.airdns.org:YYYYY' (46.165.XXX.XXX:YYYYY): Connection refused 2017-06-11 02:07:16 Client terminated, restarting in 2000 ms... 2017-06-11 02:07:17 NET Internet:ReachableViaWWAN/WR t------ 2017-06-11 02:07:18 EVENT: RECONNECTING 2017-06-11 02:07:18 Contacting 46.165.XXX.XXX:YYYYY via TCP 2017-06-11 02:07:18 EVENT: WAIT 2017-06-11 02:07:18 SetTunnelSocket returned 1 2017-06-11 02:07:19 Transport Error: TCP connect error on 'XXXXXX.airdns.org:YYYYY' (46.165.XXX.XXX:YYYYY): Connection refused 2017-06-11 02:07:19 Client terminated, restarting in 2000 ms... Is there anything more I need to configure on the router or the client? Maybe a firewall forwarding problem (if this could be the problem, what do I need to do)? Since I do not have to forward to a specific client in my home lan (that is running a OpenVPN-server), but the main router itself is the OpenVPN server, I didn't find a suitable configuration example, yet. I would be very grateful for tips or helping hints.
  2. I have RT-AC87U with official 3.0.0.4.382_50010-gb0c6a12 firmware. I have followed the official AirVPN guide. When I hit "Connect" button, it switches to "Disconnect" button. However the connection state shows running progress circle with "Connecting..." hint. Any diagnostic shows that I am not connected. The system log shows this: Apr 23 14:03:01 rc_service: service 3984:notify_rc start_vpnclient5Apr 23 14:04:01 rc_service: service 4238:notify_rc start_vpnclient5Apr 23 14:05:01 rc_service: service 4294:notify_rc start_vpnclient5Apr 23 14:06:01 rc_service: service 4349:notify_rc start_vpnclient5 (I don't do anything) I have tried restarting router - does not help. I tried using ISP's, Google's and AirVPN's DNS - does not make a difference. Any ideas what might be wrong, or how can I troubleshoot this?
  3. Hello, I am using an Asus RT-AC87U with AirVPN. I have a couple of problems. I wish to forward multiple :80 ports to multiple addresses, but I believe that is not directly possible. I can create the IPTABLES rules, but I can only open port 80 to the VPN if I am correct? Is there a way I can open multiple :80 ports on multiple local IPs? It doesn't really matter if I need different or new hardware. Second, my Asus router seems very instable. The speeds are slow (around 1.5mbps where I can get 300mbps without VPN), but that isn't the real problem. Every week or so, the VPN client disables itself without further notice, and I can't enable it manually, it simply never starts. The logs state nothing. The only option I found so far is to fully reset the router and setup everything from stock again, until it breaks again. Am I maybe better of using a custom (server-grade) box or router running PfSense (or similar)? Also keeping my first quesion in mind.
  4. Hello, I am trying to establish a connection to the AirVPN services via my Asus DSL-AC87VG running the latest firmware (v1.00.13 build502 Mar. 6, 2017). I followed the steps described in https://airvpn.org/asuswrt/ but it won't let me create a profile, because empty values for 'username' and 'password' are not allowed. If I enter my AirVPN credentials, it creates a profile but establishes no connection. The system protocol contains following output: Mar 29 19:33:31 DSL-AC87VG user.notice VPN: pptp client stop Mar 29 19:33:32 DSL-AC87VG user.notice VPN: l2tp client stop Mar 29 19:33:32 DSL-AC87VG user.notice VPN: OpenVPN client stop Mar 29 19:33:32 DSL-AC87VG user.notice VPN: OpenVPN client stop Mar 29 19:33:32 DSL-AC87VG daemon.err openvpn[4397]: Options error: Unrecognized option or missing parameter(s) in /data/openvpn/client/client.ovpn:5: proto (2.3.2) Mar 29 19:33:32 DSL-AC87VG daemon.warn openvpn[4397]: Use --help for more information. Can someone help me or has similar issues? Thanks! UPDATE: I examined the imported values from the *.ovpn. The value 'Static Key (optional)' contained a comment (# #2048bit OpenVPN static key #) before the begin block. When I remove it and create a profile (incl. AirVPN credentials) the system protocol contains: Mar 29 19:47:39 DSL-AC87VG user.notice VPN: OpenVPN client stop Mar 29 19:49:38 DSL-AC87VG user.notice VPN: pptp client stop Mar 29 19:49:39 DSL-AC87VG user.notice VPN: l2tp client stop Mar 29 19:49:39 DSL-AC87VG user.notice VPN: OpenVPN client stop Mar 29 19:49:39 DSL-AC87VG user.notice VPN: OpenVPN client stop Mar 29 19:49:39 DSL-AC87VG daemon.err openvpn[11597]: Options error: Unrecognized option or missing parameter(s) in /data/openvpn/client/client.ovpn:26: RIVATE (2.3.2) Mar 29 19:49:39 DSL-AC87VG daemon.warn openvpn[11597]: Use --help for more information.
  5. Contact Asus about the client key limitations about the VPN client on the DSL-AC68U. It was set at 2999 characters which would not allow the 4096 bit key as used by AirVPN. The firmware only allowed for 2048 and therefore could not support Airvpn and some other VPN providers that use 4096 bit keys. Asus have updated the firmware and now the DSL-AC68U supports 4096 bits and will work with AirVPN. Now has a 3999 character limit. The Asus DSL-AC68U is a great out the box modem/router with a VPN client. Not many of them on the market however little expense at £115. If your looking for a out of the box off the shelf all in one modem/router with AirVPN support then its a good buy. Was pervoiusly using Raspberry Pi setup as an AP with OpenVpn. Hope this is of help to anyone that was having the same issues getting AirVPN working with this Asus hardware.
  6. When I go into VPN > VPN CLIENT > OpenVPN, I choose the config file to upload and click Upload. It sits on the spinning dial like it is uploading and doesn't do anything after. I have tried multipl config files, and still nothing.
  7. About AsusWRT AsusWRT is a unified firmware developed by Asus for use in their recent routers. The firmware was originally based on Tomato-RT/Tomato-USB, but has since seen many changes. Asus started using this new firmware with their recent routers (RT-AC68U, RT-AC87U), but they also started moving other routers to this new firmware. Prerequisite Asus Router with AsusWRT (native OpenVPN support). Model tested: RT-AC68U but it should work for all Asus routers that have AsusWRT. see Official website for AsusWRT model support list. [Firmware Notes]: Please upgrade the router Firmware to the latest version. "New Asus Firmware supports 4096 bits key and will work with AirVPN." Steps 1. Create configuration files from our Config Generator. Select [Router or others] and choose a server you like. Tick on [Direct, protocol UDP, port 443] and click on [Generate]. Save the openvpn config file .ovpn (Ex: AirVPN__UDP-443.ovpn) anywhere on your computer. 2. Open the Asus router webinterface and click on [VPN]. Click on [Add profile], choose [OpenVPN] tab. Enter a "description", leave username and password EMPTY. Click on [browse] and select the downloaded openvpn config file (.ovpn). Click on [upload]. Click on [OK]. That's it now you can click on [Activate] to connect to AirVPN server. 3. Make sure to setup the AirVPN DNS this way: Click on [WAN] tab. Turn [DNS server] "off" (No) and enter AirVPN's DNS 10.4.0.1 as first DNS IP address (it's DNS for Protocol UDP, Port 443 - see Specs for more details). About the secondary DNS entry, we recommend picking ones from the OpenNIC Project. The AirVPN DNS will enable you to access AirVPN geo-routing services to bypass discriminations based on IP address geo-location. 4. Visit https://ipleak.net and check whether it works. Every client (PC, Smartphone, Console, Smart TV ..) which is connected to the router now is secured by VPN and also has full access to the anti-geo-blocking service. Useful Info A custom firmware for Asus routers based on official AsusWRT called Asuswrt-Merlin is available. AsusWRT-Merlin retains all the features of the original stock AsusWRT firmware with added/enhanced features. More info on AsusWRT-Merlin website http://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/features
