  1. This eavesdropping is kinda old news, but no harm bringing this up as a reminder for the benefit of those who may not have heard about it earlier. I have 3 Samsung flat screen televisions but were purchased long before this eavesdropping became an issue. I love the quality of their products in the past but I'm also done with them. Samsung certainly isn't the only game in town for quality consumer electronics.
  2. Don't travel out of the country with your smartphone. Get a burner phone that can be used wherever you're going. You can throw it away before boarding the jet to come home, or if you keep it on the return flight, erase all data before the TSA goons demand to see it. If they demand to keep it (whether from frustration, or just because they're overzealous, stupid assholes), so what? It's a burner phone, what have you lost?
  3. OmniNegro-- So you're saying I can and should GPG with my Protonmail account? Are there any good tutorials that can instruct me how to do that? Protonmail has it's own app; is it safe to use it? I also use Startmail and Posteo. Do you know if they require JavaScript?
  4. For the past few years, my feeling has been that this war is probably never going to end. It's going to be a tech/encryption see-saw between the bad guys (the 3 letter agencies) and the good guys fighting those bastards. I'm trusting (perhaps naively, I don't know) that there will always be good people out in the shadows with the skills and knowledge to resist, frustrate, and ultimately defeat the surveillance goons. I choose to look at it this way-- I'm 60, and I truly never believed I would live to see the Soviet empire brought down. True, it crumbled from implosion rather than brought down from an external force. But HOW it dissolved doesn't matter. I heard for myself when Randi Rhodes declared her conviction that Amerika would never be brought down by an external enemy. If the Amerikan empire falls (and it will), it will implode from within.
  5. On the recommendation of giganerd, I recently purchased a subscription with Posteo.de. I like the layout and the green theme (gray is available as an alternate) with 2GB of storage, which is more than plenty for my purposes. It's seems like a great email service for an unbeatable price. Having praised it so highly, I probably won't renew when the 1 year subscription expires because I prefer Protonmail. Yes, Protonmail certainly costs a good bit more, but I think it has better, more sophisticated security features. But if you need a good email service at a budget price, you really can't go wrong with Posteo.
  6. Unless/until someone convinces me otherwise, I'm trusting that Protonmail is doing right by it's customers. How many other email services out there are attempting to keep users' emails private and secure to the level that Protonmail is supposedly doing? Zhang can correct me if I'm wrong but I think he gave his personal endorsement of Protonmail in another thread. That prompted me to purchase the $48 subscription back in November and I really like what I've seen so far. As for not being able to login using their TOR address, I've tried it on my Samsung Android tablet and my iPhone SE. I'm using the 2 password method and I can get past the first password, but after entering the password to decrypt the mailbox itself, it just hangs up. As far as I can tell, JavaScript is enabled on the Orfox browser on my Samsung tablet as it shows the little yellow "JS" icon on the righthand side of the address bar.
  7. Doesn't work for me, unfortunately. Tried it on Orfox browser on my Android tablet and Onion browser on my iPhone and can't get past the second login stage/mailbox decryption.
  8. CSETmail.com Never heard of them until a week ago when I did a search online. A few users had given very high praise and the service does appear to have some impressive features. I went to the website to contact them and ask some questions and got a reply about a day and a half later. However... in using their website contact form I was *required* to give a first and last name, an email address (understandable), AND a phone number. If you don't provide that info you can't send the contact form. I wasn't happy about this so I gave a fake name and phone number. Anyway, the following is the verbatim response they sent. Hello, We are a Canadian based company from Vancouver, British Columbia. Our servers are located in the British Virgin Islands. There are several layers of deep Encryption and TLS Encryption as well as DKIM, MX, SPF, to name a few. We offer 1 GB of space. There will be an option to add GB in the future. We are currently implementing the white label ability and alias's. It should be complete in the next 2 weeks. This is the limited info I am able to release at this time. I can tell you whatever is deleted from the sender or receiver side is permanently erased from our servers. Hope this helps, CSETadmin No mention if Bitcoin was accepted or if you could sign up anonymously (though I admit I didn't think to ask about either). https://www.csetmail.com/ It would be interesting to get thoughts/opinions on this service.

  10. Maybe the Hillary fanatics are beginning to realize that the DNC actively working against Sanders in favor of Hillary was a really, really bad move. NAHHHHH! It's much easier to whine about imagined Russian hacking of the election and any other insanely lame ass excuses they can grasp at. They will place the blame ANYWHERE except where it really belongs and when you're in that position, looking in the mirror is a VERY uncomfortable thing to do. Yep, I'm feasting on schadenfreude right now and by god it tastes delicious! (As an aside, it's pretty telling that so many on the left will photoshop a pic of Trump and Putin in a clearly gay suggestive setting, yet are the same ones hyper vigilant against the slightest perception of anti-homosexuality. Well well well.... I guess homophobia from the left is perfectly alright if it's directed against someone you really don't like. Which just proves to me that the politically conservative right wing doesn't have a monopoly on hypocrisy.)
  11. Not sure if this has anything to do with the problem you're having but I can't get Facetime to work on my iMac desktop through AirVPN. It was suggested to go through either Tunnelblick or Viscosity and see if that solves the problem. Haven't tried it yet so I can't say if that works.
  12. I'm researching serveral messaging apps for my Android tablet (version 6.0.1). Thoughts/opinions on these? Conversations (Jabber/XMPP); Threema; Wickr; Pryvate. Are there others I've overlooked? Surprisingly, Signal is NOT compatible with my tablet. Go figure.... Thanks very, very much for your input.
  13. Why so? What about Conversations (Jabber/XMPP)? Is it a good private/secure IM app for Android?
  14. Maybe so, zhang. But I still wouldn't use it. Telegram..... ChatSecure..... Signal.
  15. Looks like we can add Virginia to the list. www.rt.com/usa/372323-virginia-proposes-porn-resolution/
  16. Russia... though I know that's very unlikely. Iceland... Finland... Japan... Luxembourg... Belarus... India... Ireland... Venezuela... Bolivia... Greece... Portugal and France again? I'm with LZ1 here-- We already have a pretty good selection with the current lineup of servers. So if it isn't in the budget or the cards for Air to have servers in the countries listed in this post, I'm perfectly okay with that. This is a great place to be.

  22. Durkasmurk-- My personal rule (and strong recommendation) is that you should never use a vpn or email service based in the U.S. Especially if you live in the U.S. And with recent passage of the snoopers' charter in the U.K., I would strongly advise not to use a vpn or email service based there also.
