Auth_failure after sleep Windows 8

I'm using openVPN gui V2 with generated connectors on windows 8. Generally everything works fine, I put the computer in sleep and when it wakes up the connection reconnects to the VPN. After about 10 or 15 sleeps the VPN will try to reconnect and get AUth_failure as the VPN is believes it is still connected (end of log shows connected with errors)

 

At this point I am unable to disconnect and even after exiting the OpenVPN (right click icon and exit) and terminating the OpenVPN daemon service in task manager, it still believes it is connected. I have also tried signing out and this doesn't clear the connection.

 

I'm pretty sure that killing one of the service host tasks will do the trick but there are quite a few and I'm often logged in remotely so if I kill the wrong one I can't access the computer.

The symptoms suggest an OpenVPN crash. Try to kill openvpn.exe and restart it.

openvpn.exe is the openvpn daemon in windows 8. Killing that doesnt kill the connection.
