Hi, I wanted to use airVPN because my ISP throttles p2p when I download bittorents. I have litle idea about VPN technology. If I can set it up without using the airvpn client I would prefer to. I'm trying to set up a connection on a Ubuntu 12.10 system and another on a Windows7 64bit system. Considering the Win7(64) first. If I launch the "set up a vpn connection" wizard it asks for the internet address. if I type in https://airvpn.org/ then I get this error "The remote connection was not made because the name of the remote access server did not resolve." What internet address should I enter into this text box? Thanks for any help.

its not possible to connect to airvpn without installing any software when using win7 but in ubuntu this is built in just follow the instructions on this page to get things ruining on both operating systems

https://airvpn.org/enter/

for windows you can for example also use the offical openvpn client http://openvpn.net/index.php/download.htm and a third party one like viscosity https://secure.sparklabs.com/store/viscosity/

Hello!

Some clarifications:

AirVPN is based on free and open source OpenVPN by James Yonan and OpenVPN Project / OpenVPN Technologies, Inc.. We consider OpenVPN the most reliable and secure VPN client/server solution currently existing.

OpenVPN is available for most existing OS (Linux, OS X, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Android, iOS - in client mode, Tomato, DD-WRT, Windows...). OpenVPN can be invoked directly via command line or can be controlled through a wrapper or GUI. We don't bind our users and customers to run any proprietary software from us: the Configuration Generator can generate all the files needed by OpenVPN or any well-developed OpenVPN wrapper. Some wrappers have minor or major limitations, for example network-manager does not pass the explicit-exit-notify directive, Tunnelblick (an open source wrapper for OS X) is incapable to handle properly the socks-proxy and http-proxy directives.

On Windows, OpenVPN is packaged with "OpenVPN GUI", an OpenVPN GUI. If you don't wish to run our client or OpenVPN directly, OpenVPN GUI may provide an excellent solution (as long as you don't need more than 50 configurations at once, currently OpenVPN GUI limit) and does not suffer, as far as we know, of any limitation apart the aforementioned one.

The correct link Shippy was probably meaning is http://openvpn.net/index.php/download/community-downloads.html

Kind regards

Thanks. I downloaded and installed this -
openvpn-install-2.3.1-I001-x86_64

but doing this
Start Button>All Programs>OpenVPN folder>OpenVPN GUI>

generated this
"Error creating HKLM\Software\OpenVPN-GUI key"

and that was all. How can I run OpenVPN? Thanks for any help.

That allowed the GUI to create the key. What happened next is that OpenVPN icon appeared in the Notification Area - 2 pcs with red screens. If I click on this icon with the left button nothing happens. If I click on it with the right button I get 'Settings' or 'Exit'. Settings has 3 tabs - Proxy, General and About. Sorry to ask again, but what do I do next? Thank you.

OK , this is solved. I worked out that I had to download separate certs and ovpn files and put them in OpenVPN's configuration folder. Now it connects to AirVPN no problem.

Hi,

Have the same problem.

Which certs and ovpn files do I have to download?

Hello!

First of all, please read the welcome e-mail and the instructions pertaining to your system.

Picking which configurations to download depends on various factors: the country you wish to connect to, the server that has the lowest latency with your node, the available bandwidth of the server. You can also pick just a geographical zone (a country or a continent) and let the system choose the server that the system itself calculates as "the best" (under a performance point of view) for your node. Have also a look at our servers monitor for a complete overview (click "Status" from the upper menu).

Where do I download them?

The Configuration Generator will generate them and let you download them according to your preferences (menu "Client Area"->"Config Generator"). Please read the instructions for more information. The FAQ and the How-To sections include several, additional information to get full advantage of all the additional features of the service (from port forwarding to Dynamic DNS and many more).

Where is the OpenVPN configuration folder?

It may vary according to your OS.

How do I put certs and opvn files in it?

Decompress the archive (if you downloaded a compressed archive) and just copy and paste the files.

Kind regards
