Tunnelblick Connection to AirVPN Servers with Tor Fails

Recommended Posts

Problem:

Tunnelblick can not establish a connection to AirVPN servers or the connection can be established but disconnects immediately when the Tor Browser Bundle is active.

As the following forum posts have already stated, your instructions on connecting to AirVPN servers with Tor does not work anymore with Tunnelblick.

Each of these posts belongs to different forum topics and none of them offers a complete solution.

Here are the steps that I followed:

Clean installed Mac OS X 10.8.3

Installed and launched Tor Browser Bundle 2.3.25-5 64-Bit

Logged in to AirVPN website and created the OpenVPN configuration files with the settings Connection Mode: Direct, protocol TCP, port 443 and Proxy: SOCKS, 127.0.0.1, 9150 (Since the version 2.3.25-4, Tor Browser Bundle has set the SOCKS port to 9150 on all platforms.)

Installed Tunnelblick 3.3beta36 with the provided configuration files

I have tried connecting to different AirVPN servers but that does not work. Also I disabled the Monitor network settings option in Tunnelblick VPN Details window but that does not help either.

Here is the Tunnelblick log (I tried to attach it as a .txt but that function did not work on Chrome.):

Problem:

Tunnelblick can not establish a connection to AirVPN servers or the connection can be established but disconnects immediately when the Tor Browser Bundle is active.

Hello!

That's correct, Tunnelblick does not seem to support properly OpenVPN connections over a socks proxy. Unfortunately we are currently not aware of any solution to this problem, it does not depend on us in any way.

Kind regards

Thank you for your response.

I would be happy if you could answer the questions below if you have any related information.

Does any previous version of Tunnelblick support OpenVPN connections over a SOCKS proxy?

Does Viscosity support OpenVPN connections over a SOCKS proxy?

Do you know any Mac VPN client which supports OpenVPN connections over a SOCKS proxy?

P.S.

The image file which is attached to my previous post has nothing to do with the post. I was just testing with a different file format after many unsuccessful .txt attachment attempts. When I saw the published post, I have realized that the files were attached but not displayed by the browser properly. Admin is free to delete the attachment.

Here are the answers to my own questions which were asked in the previous post.

No, no previous version of Tunnelblick does support OpenVPN connections over a SOCKS proxy. Also Tunnelblick will not provide this function in the the near future. Here is the developer's response:

Unless someone submits code to do this and it can be tested thoroughly it won't be added any time in the foreseeable future as I don't have the expertise to do it.

No, Viscosity does not support OpenVPN connections over a SOCKS proxy. No future plans either. Developer's response:

I'm afraid this is probably something you're better off directing to the Tor community, as we don't have much experience with Tor.

No, there is no other OpenVPN client that works on Mac platform.
