Eddie Android edition on Android TV

Hello!

Thank you for your tests! It is expected, please see here:
https://airvpn.org/forums/topic/65815-android-tv-vpn-connection-at-startup-why-openvpn-for-android-can-do-it-and-eddie-not/

Development will follow the plan as described, already on the 3.3.0 release, but remember that the connection at boot will not work on Android 14 TV and higher versions, no matter which app you run. Keep testing! For anything else remember to include the report (in private if you don't want to make it public).

Kind regards

I'm sorry, Staff, but I don't understand your answer here.

You say the behavior is expected and that "development will follow the plan as described".
The plan would be "This is Eddie's part that needs to be re-designed and re-implemented in order to allow connection at boot on Android TV 10, 11, 12, and 13", from the linked discussion?

But it's still not been implemented in these new betas?

All this to ask: can I expect Eddie to autoconnect to VPN at boot/resume from sleep in the near future or not, on Android TV 12?

Hello!

Correct. Here, we noticed now, you raise another issue, i.e. re-connection at wake up, which is not necessarily related. Please follow the instructions to send us the report related to a re-connection failure when the device is woken up to let us investigate.

Kind regards

I did not test reconnect after waking up from sleep. Maybe that already works, I don't know. I was mainly concerned about connecting at boot.

In the meantime, I have verified that there are other VPN apps (from competitors of yours that I do not want to mention in public, as a courtesy) that are working at boot even on Android TV 14.

We already explained why this is not possible with non built-in apps and VPN protocols when Always on VPN is not available and background activities are restricted. It may become possible only after rooting the device or when the manufacturer has customized the device properly. Eddie and other VPN apps using wg and/or ovpn support “Auto‑Connect when app launches” or “Auto‑Reconnect if connection drops” etc. But that’s different from launching the app itself on boot and keep it running, which under stricter background/boot restrictions, and when Always on VPN is not available, is prevented by default. You can find confirmation on Google documentation that Always on VPN is strictly necessary: https://developer.android.com/develop/connectivity/vpn#always-on

I honestly don't know what to tell you. A person that has no reason to lie to me told me that a different provider offered an autostarting at boot VPN app (tested on Android TV 14). If they're lying I really don't get their motives, it's not as if they're selling me affiliated links or anything. I won't mention your competitor here but, if you wanna test it, just drop me a PM and I'll be happy to provide the relevant information for you to check.

All this aside, what you write is interesting. Am I correct in understanding that if I had a way to launch Eddie at boot, it should be able to then autologin and autoconnect? Because, unless I've missed it, that's not happening for me. Could you clarify on this point?
Eddie autostarting through TV QuickActions Pro should then autologin (it does that) and autoconnect (it doesn't seem to do that)?

So it's hearsay, not a direct test.

Auto login yes, but automatic connection when the user starts the app, either during the bootstrap or in any another moment, is not an available feature. Currently Eddie Android edition can connect automatically only during the device bootstrap (if it is configured to do so) and only when "Always on VPN" is enabled for the app.

Could you add it as an option? Or at least add an intent to start the connection through another tool (like Tasker or the aforementioned TV QuickActions Pro)?

Hello!

Starting from Eddie 3.3.0 RC 1 now available, the app is capable to auto connect when it is launched, on both Android and Android TV, according to the quick connection scheme. Check it out!

Kind regards

Older post, but I'm using Eddie for Android from 2 months ago or so and haven't had any issues, putting the TV to sleep and waking it up, the VPN connection is still active.

Might be worth going through the developer settings on your TV and checking if you can enable persistent connections or something similar?
