Having so many problems in Windows 8 Pro (64x)

I have had enormous problems connecting either through openVPN or the airVPN client. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing repeatedly. I have tried with and without a firewall and the same with antivirus. I have run an antivirus scan and my computer is clean. I have tried 2.2.2, 2.2.3 rc1 and 2.2.3 rc2. I have enabled networking on start up and enabled the RAS connection manager.

I have been mysteriously able to connect a few times, once through openVPN where I found that IP remained the same and my internet speeds were abysmal. The other times have been through the airVPN client as it was what I always used before on Windows 7 (with many different software internet security suites) and have never had a problem. However now, I find that I can load google and run a search before I cannot do anything, my upload spikes enormously(24000kb+), when this stops I have control again for a few seconds before the same process repeats.

There is no difference between windows' firewall and comodo's, I've tried for days to resolve the matter from other posts, but I can't understand what's going wrong. My TAP adapter keeps disappearing, and nearly every time I restart the computer (which is every time I want to access airVPN as otherwise it can't even log me in), I have to uninstall and reinstall openVPN. I am beginning to doubt my computer skills. I will provide logs if you want, but they change literally every time, sometimes every step passes and is ok, others nearly everything fails - but that has no correlation as to whether I can use the service or not.

Also when I uninstall openVPN I have to restart my computer otherwise I gannot connect to my router. I've also tried two different routers and different DNS servers (default, google, comodo and open)

Unfortunately the symptoms strongly suggest that your computer is compromised.

First of all, please check thoroughly for malware. It's also absolutely necessary that you determine which task(s)/process(es) are causing the bandwidth spikes and cause your loss of control of your own system: it's likely that there you will find the malignant program(s). To monitor your packets try with Wireshark:

I have just run a full scan on my system using Kaspersky Internet Security 2013. It came back entirely clear. Just to clarify, the internet problems only occur when I try to use the VPN, when I use the internet normally I have no problems. I am installing Wireshark now though. I'll get back to you asap.

Try running KIS 2013 Rescue disk (Make Bootable CD from KIS 2013 - support - tools) as it definitely sounds like you have malware on your system.

I have been running the AIR VPN connector on Windows 8 x64 for about 6 weeks with out issue. I am now running OpenVPN 2.3.0 x64 which works quite well and even reconnects after putting the computer to sleep and then waking it. The only issue I have had was sometimes it will fail to disconnect from an AIR server and I might have to kill the OpenVPN daemon and wait for the AIR server to drop the connection before reconnecting.

Although no anti virus could detect the 'root' virus, I did eventually find 'children' viruses, so I had to reformat. It's like connecting to a college network! :laugh:

So I have shoved WinXP into a virtual box machine and am doing all AirVPN from there. Unfortunately I have little use of AirVPN now since I do not want to put secure information through the VPN, especially through a compromised browser.

A VPN is not and must never be intended as an antimalware tool. As clarified in our ToS, a VPN does not protect your computer or your behavior against malware, it has nothing to do with it. Consider it like a new ISP. However, connections between the virtual network nodes are not allowed, so it's not a college network.

So I have shoved WinXP into a virtual box machine and am doing all AirVPN from there. Unfortunately I have little use of AirVPN now since I do not want to put secure information through the VPN, especially through a compromised browser.

The above sentence can only be explained with an incredibly poor understanding of what a VPN is and what our service consists of. If you were looking for a completely different service, such as an antivirus, please feel free to ask for a refund. Without being connected to the VPN my internet works fine. I've done a malware and virus scan and found nothing. Any help would be appreciated!

Can you determine which task(s)/process(es) cause such bandwidth peak? Detecting it/them is vital to understand what happens.

It looks like airvpn is the culprit. When I connect to it, the process shows up as sending massive amounts of data (>1000000 bytes in just a short time). When this happens my internet also stops working and I can't load any webpages until I disconnect again.

Can you please tell us which version are you running? Which Win 8 version do you have (32 bit or 64 bit)? Can you please send us the Air client logs?

The logs look just fine.

Are you 100% sure that your network monitor reports airvpn.exe as the source of all that upload bandwidth? The Air client is an OpenVPN wrapper, it just communicates with airvpn.org via TLS for user comfort (to display servers list, prepare the OpenVPN configuration...) at the login (very few kilobytes). Can you see the destination(s) which airvpn.exe establishes connections to? It should be only one, and only during the login. After the VPN connection has been established, you should see no more traffic from airvpn.exe.

You might also like to perform a connection through OpenVPN GUI (don't launch airvpn.exe at all), to make a comparison.

Thanks for the offer but I found the VPN especially useful and I definitely got my moneys worth. A+ would buy again, would recommend it too. Just for different things than I originally planned.

LOL! That made me laugh pretty hard... it basically means you are so stupid and stfu, right?

Well, why use windows 8 in the first place, especially when it's just out. There are bound to be lots of bugs as with any new OS and Windows 7 is perfectly save and working well. W8 doesn't even improve performance on anything and looks weird as well. Not gonna change ever unless I absolutely have too.

About people whining about getting viruses or whatever when connected to Air, well...it obviously has nothing to do with Air, though a VPN service might make for a good bait for some people. It shouldn't be a problem with a decent firewall and anti-virus, and most of the time your own behavior compromises the security of your system.
