Best Email Service for Privacy?

Sorry if this is a bit off-topic but interested to get your opinion/perspective.

Am seeking something usable by an English speaker and that is hopefully free. This would be a useful email for registering for forums and other accounts. Ideally allow IMAP and be compatible with GPG/Ubuntu/Thunderbird. Ideally in as "safe" a jurisdiction as possible - i.e. non-US and non-US lackey countries.

I know Tormail is also an option but I know the rumors are out there about it being a honeypot. Perhaps just buying some hosting on a foreign web host and setting up email is best?
