ANSWERED Can't connect to Wireguard, when I connect to OpenVPN downloads are incredibly slow.

Recommended Posts

Recently bought AirVPN and have been trying to set it up. I wanted to connect to Wireguard. I downloaded Wireguard application, created config in AirVPN and was able to successfully import and activate config in Wireguard.

When I try to connect to Wireguard in AirVPN off either Recommended or manually selecting a protocol I am stuck in a loop of trying to connect to different servers, with no success. I've attached the AirVPN logs from this attempt.

I am able to connect to OpenVPN, my OpenVPN speeds when downloading anything in Qbit are incredibly slow (10kbs a second). I already did bind my VPN in Qbit. I've tested with more popular torrents with many more seeders and I can only cap out at 2mbs download speed. I have a gigabit connection connected to ethernet. I wanted to try Wireguard as I was under the impression things could be faster with Wireguard compared to OpenVPN.

I attached the logs for OpenVPN, although I'm not sure if that would be helpful for that question.

Let me know if theres more information I should provide, or additional settings I should take a look at (Firewall, or router settings)

Thanks!

Hello!

Multiple problems are visible from the logs you kindly sent:
  1. IPv6 works intermittently or does not work at all in your infrastructure, but you explicitly forced Eddie to connect over IPv6 and not IPv4
  2. The Express VPN Tun Driver interferes even when not used by Eddie
  3. Additional problems but they should be indirect and should be solved when 1 and 2 are solved too
  4. Possible too large MTU size
Likely solutions:
  1. Switch back to IPv4, IPv6 (don't force IPv6) in Preferences > Networking > Internet Protocol used for connection (i.e. the default setting that you modified)
  2. In Preferences > Networking > VPN Interface name field enter eddie then click Save button. Furthermore make sure you do not run Express and AirVPN software simultaneously. Optionally remove Express completely (not strictly necessary in theory)
  3. ...
  4. If a connection goes through but the throughput is still low upgrade to Eddie 2.24 (see here) and test again WireGuard connections. If the throughput is still low set 1280 bytes in Preferences > WireGuard > MTU window
If additional problems arise please publish a complete system report, please see here to do it:

Thanks for the help!

I switched back to IPv4, IPv6, uninstalled ExpressVPN (was unaware it was interfering, I still had the program but was not logged into it), and upgraded to 2.24.  I am now able to connect to Wireguard and verified via ipleak. My speeds are looking slightly better, although slower than anticipated, and fluctuate quite a large amount (on a popular torrent got up to 27 mbs, but then have fluctuated down several times). Checking on speedtest does show a higher download speed than I had previously, and my 10kbs downloads on less popular torrents have at least moved up to 2mbs.

I did export my system report in case there was anything else I should take a look at and fix. https://eddie.website/report/c08e864a/

I am at least able to connect now, which is the biggest win, but was wondering if there are any other changes I should look at.

Thanks again for your help!

Hello!

Please test all the possible MTU values in the Preferences > WireGuard window and stick with the one which can provide for the best performance. Each time you change value remember to re-start the connection from scratch to apply the change.

Also make sure that no QoS / shaping / traffic management tool is active on your system and router (in particular, ascertain no interference against UDP). Last but not least, please get informed about the traffic shaping policy of your ISP.

If a specific policy is in place, some other connection modes (example OpenVPN over TCP to port 443 of entry-IP address 3) could avoid triggering the traffic shaping and improve the throughput.

Test also WireGuard to port 51820 (IANA assigned WireGuard port), just in case your ISP throttles UDP to/from low ports. Change connection mode in Preferences > Protocols window.

Kind regards
