Ugh. I hate being the newbie. Need some fundamentals explained.

Recommended Posts

I am not an idiot. I have just never done this before.

My setup:

Lenovo T500 Laptop

Windows 8 (meh)

Wireless connection to Motorola SBG6580 cable modem

Charter Internet

Yesterday I purchased AirVPN, Installed the client, and began trying to set this up for complete anonymous internet usage, from browsing to P2P. All traffic through the VPN. That is my goal.

I can connect to the Pavonis server. Probably others, but I live in Missouri, so Chicago is the closest o me, and hey, it's the new gigabit server needing some love from what I gather.

I have been trying to set up Comodo to block all traffic not coming through the tunnel, but the closest I ever get is blocking everything. I don't know if it is an issue with my local IP white list or what, but I have run out of my own troubleshooting techniques at this point.

The biggest question I have to start out with is about how to get any traffic to go through the VPN tunnel at all. Maybe I am misunderstanding, but when I look at the AirVPN client and see download and upload consistently at 0kB/sec, it seems like I am doing something fundamentally wrong. SHould hat not be showing traffic if I am pumping packets through it, or do I have the wrong idea?

I am connected to the server. But nothing I do is taking advantage of it as far as I can tell. I am still just online as usual. If I can figure out how to block all other communications besides what is available through my connection to Pavonis, will my traffic automatically start going through the only available connection, or is there something else I need to do to get my data going through AirVPN rather than my stock connection?

I have spent at least 4 hours trying to use Google and the forums to figure this out, but I don't even know what to search for much of the time.

That link goes to a few screenshots of my settings. The Global Setting to block all traffic after everything in the white list is set to allow currently, because when I change it to block, I can't do anything. My modem itself says I have no connectivity, which leads me to believe the biggest problem I have to fix is letting my PC communicate with my modem, or fixing some conflict with my Modem connecting to Charter, but I really don't know for sure.

If I can provide anything else to help you help me, please let me know. I paid for a year of this, and would like to get it figured out as soon as I can.

Thank you, friends.

Hello!

Our servers push routes and gw so that your device traffic will be entirely tunneled without any further configuration.

If the client shows "0" traffic but you're exchanging data, something might be wrong. First of all, connect to an Air server, then open a browser and browse to our website. Check that the bottom central box is green and says "Connected!".

If it's red, please send us your client logs (right-click on the Air dock icon and select "Logs", then "Copy to clipboard" and finally paste here) at your convenience.

Kind regards

Whew. I finally got it working.

Turns out you guys have a version for Windows 8 that includes OpenVPN 2.3. The client I downloaded for Windows originally was not recognizing it.

It is working great now. Thank you.
