I've been battling with slow dns queries since the start of my AirVPN subscription a year ago on my Windows 10 machine.

When accessing websites, maybe 1 out of 2 sites loads very slowly (10-15 seconds). I'm using a Pi-Hole as my dns. My computer is the only slow device in the house. I don't have any issues when not connected to the vpn, so that pretty much rule out Pi-Hole as being the culprit.

After a quite extensive search, I tried multiple things:

- setting the Interface metric of the TAP/wintun adapter lower than my ethernet adapter;
- adding the directive pull-filter ignore "DNS6"
- setting IPv4 only in Eddie as the internet protocol used for the connection;
- disabling IPv6 on all network interfaces;
- disabling IPv6 on the router (edgerouter-x, "set system ipv6 disable" command);
- Enabling "Ignore IPv6 DNS pushed by the server" in Eddie;
- I tried to use Microsoft tool to disable IPv6, but the post linking to it was from 2016 and the tool isn't hosted by Microsoft anymore.

When setting Google as my dns provider in Eddie (instead of Pi-Hole), I don't notice any slowdown. I don't notice slowdown either when using AirVPN dns.

Even after trying to disable IPv6, I still see Pi-Hole resolving AAAA records, which makes me wonder if IPv6 is really disabled.

nslookup still returns IPv6 addresses.

I'm really out of ideas. Anyone knows what I could try next to solve my issue?

Please provide a support file while connected and pihole set as DNS server. In Logs tab, click the lifebelt icon and paste or upload the output here.

Was that you with all the REDACTED things in the file, or Eddie? I was kind of interested in the info about routes and their priorities/metric values.

Could you please reenable IPv6, then rename the default.profile file to something.else? Relaunch Eddie and only change the DNS server in Eddie to pihole. Connect and see if you still experience slowdowns.
There's also a wintun device installed, but no OpenVPN version capable of using it. Did you once test that out?

yeah sorry i saw usernames, MAC addresses and whitelisted domain names in the log, maybe I went too far when redacting stuff ;)

I reset the Eddie app many times in the past few days and you're right, I forgot to add back the link to the wintun openvpn .exe.

I did what you asked. I still experience slowdowns. I also added a screenshot of my current DNS settings. Here's the new log. Thanks!

Hm. When you browse to a website and the DNS resolution is slow, does pihole show this in the query log right away or only after you wait for the resolution to finish on Windows?
Could you try setting NetLock mode to None and see if the same thing happens?
Then you could try adding pihole's IPv6 address as the second server. I don't think it will help much, but i can't repeat myself enough: It's Windows, you never know. Maybe it tries to use the IPv6 DNS address of the Ethernet port (this is actually a feature called Smart Multihomed Name Resolution, or simply Smart DNS) because Windows prefers IPv6 system-wide (and that one is the only v6 DNS), but since this connection attempt is filtered out thanks to NetLock, you are essentially experiencing a timeout. It might work on some websites right away because not all websites are IPv6-enabled, therefore, they don't have AAAA RRs.

By the way, you can delete the newly created profile and rename your old profile back to default.profile. We can rule out Eddie configuration.

Could you try setting NetLock mode to None and see if the same thing happens?
disabling network lock has the same delay

Then you could try adding pihole's IPv6 address as the second server.
Unfortunately it didn't help

Then there's something on your system running and doing something. Antivirus, maybe?

I must ask: When the slowdown happens, does the browser status bar hang at "Resolving X" or does it tell you "Connecting to X" or "Waiting for answer from X"? I feel this question is redunant because we can actually rule out DNS and WFP. I also feel like we're missing some crucial info here.

Another one: Give us some examples of websites which resolve right away and which cause hanging. Maybe I experience the same, since I too am running a pihole device in the network.

Ok so I did some further testing.

I set up Eddie on my raspberry pi. I didn't notice any slowdown;
I set up Eddie on my laptop (other computer) with Windows 10, same setup (pi-hole as main and only dns): slowdown are present;
I tried the openvpn client and slow downs are present;
When I put Ad Guard DNS instead of pi-hole, no slow downs;

Then I checked again the delay after which the dns lookups show up on the pi-hole logs. I noticed that when visiting a website with no IPv6 lookup, it loaded up fast. However when visiting a website which returns both A and AAAA records, the A record shows up immediately in the pi-hole logs. then there's a 10-15 seconds delay on the browser. then when the website loads, I see the AAAA record in pi-hole.

So my guess is that there's an issue on Windows with AAAA lookups when connected to the vpn.

Does that makes sense?

Yes, it does. In a command prompt/PowerShell with the same setup (VPN, Pi-Hole), can you do a few ping tests?

I'm expecting hangs on 3, 4 and 5. If you experience them, your problem is unmistakenly IPv6 connectivity.

Now my theory is as follows: You don't have v6 connectivity with your ISP according to the support files of Eddie, so it works quickly because in this case pretty much all OSes by default prefer v4 due to a lack of a Unique Global IPv6 Address, or UGA. They assume no IPv6 connectivity if there is only a local v6 address, or ULA (starting with fe…). Now, OpenVPN pulls the v6 routes from the server (2000::/4 and 3000::/4) and sets them to be routed via VPN. This presumably puts v6 back on the table and Windows takes advantage of it. But because of some problem with v6 connectivity Windows can't reach shit, and finally, after some timeout expires, falls back to v4.
One problem is that you actually might have disabled IPv6 on system-level. This should have stopped Windows even from considering to try IPv6. I can't say what is broken there, as Eddie still pulled v6 routes and actually directed OpenVPN to apply them and this ended with ominous errors. It shouldn't have happened at all, but also honestly, this is not the first time I'm seeing this behavior of Eddie.

I don't know. If you use vanilla OpenVPN, all you need to do is delete two directives from the config file and v6 routes aren't pushed by the server. When you set Layer IPv6 to Block in Preferences > Networking, Eddie instead uses pull-filter directives to filter out anything related to v6, but that doesn't work as well, it seems. I would write "maybe use vanilla OpenVPN for the time being?", but I don't know the duration of "for the time being" as well. :D

Not sure about that. OP wants OpenVPN/Eddie on Windows to work with an ad-blocking DNS server in his/her network, you are suggesting a different setup with multiple tunnels and a custom NetLock, as far as I understood your guide. I fail to see the similarity.

Just came to my mind: Set DNS switching mode to None in Eddie's preferences and don't set Pi-Hole as DNS there. This way it uses the NIC's DNS servers. Also don't disable v6 just yet. Are the slowdowns still there, then?

You can do single tunnel session if that is preferred. or multiple.
As per "custom NetLock" that will "kick in place" only after Comodo->Network Zones are correctly defined as per member's system specs(Check the in-topic How-to). Similar or NOT OP can give it a shot.

But seeing there's really an obvious 10-11 seconds delay in the pi-hole logs between A and AAAA logs tells me i'm pretty confident the issue is with ipv6.

If I set switching mode to none with no dns defined, both the dns server of the current vpn connection and the dns set in pi-hole resolve. this happens either if "ignore ipv6 dns pushed by the server" is ticked or not.

Which ovpn directives would I need to modify in the .ovpn config file to block ipv6? I'll test that.

After that if it doesn't work at this point I might just use Airvpn's dns server and consider switching to linux in the future. It's just that it's a big migration for my setup, not to be considered lightly.

I really appreciate the help you gave me.
