Eddie and Utorrent configurations for Mojave

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm very new to using a vpn and used to download without with Utorrent. I've been searching all day for user guides on how to make sure I have Utorrent's preferences correct with the vpn but I'm coming up short because everything I see is for windows and I have mojave. I'm not the most technologically savvy person when it comes to the nitty-gritty of these things. I have looked at the faq's for doing the configs but the posts are quite a few years old and are directed for windows users and not macs. I'm currently using Utorrent 1.8.7. Could I post screen shots of what my network settings look like on Utorrent and get a bit of guidance?

Hello!

Welcome to AirVPN!

You can refer to the guide in my signature for most general queries. Wherein you can also find guides to torrenting like this one: https://airvpn.org/topic/14949-help-with-port-forwarding/?p=30873

So:

  1. Download AirVPNs Eddie client and enable Network Lock.
  2. Download qBittorent.
  3. Then read the first link and adjust the settings.
  4. Download test torrent and see if it shows an AirVPN IP. It shouldn't show your IP.
  5. (Remember to always start the AirVPN client before the torrent client) then Torrent.

I would recommend that you switch to qBittorent and thus away from Utorrent. For convenience and perhaps added security. That's your choice however. In regards to torrenting, it doesn't matter much if you're using Windows or not and it's not a lengthy process to setup the AirVPN client (Eddie) nor the torrent client of choice .

Moderators do not speak on behalf of AirVPN. Only the Official Staff account does. Please also do not run Tor Exit Servers behind AirVPN, thank you.
Did you make a guide or how-to for something? Then contact me to get it listed in my new user guide's Guides Section, so that the community can find it more easily.

Funny you mention qbittorent, I had just downloaded it after doing more searching and saw people saying stop using utorrent. I've been making sure I turn the network lock on (didn't know what that was the first time I launched airvpn, d'oh) and not loading the torrent app until I'm fully connected through the vpn. I have a (probably) dumb question. I'm reading the setup guide and see this at the bottom of the list, "There you find listed all network connections. Identify the one used by the VPN." My dumb question is, where do I find this information? As I understand it, the network connection changes with each new login and it's the IP that is scrolling at the top from whichever country it chooses. I don't know how much this part matters, but this is what the drop down options show on qbitt:

Thank you for your patience with my ignorance.

editing to say that I got that info from https://www.ghacks.net/2016/03/23/qbittorrent-block-transfers-vpn-disconnect/ which I had seen referenced as help guide in one of the posts I was reading on this forum.

You don't need to worry about that at all. Ive never touched that setting, mine works fine. You can always bind it to the interface you use to connect to the VPN just to be safe (I had mine set to bind to utun1 since that's my Airport connection to the VPN). I don't remember what that does in the event the VPN disconnects but just use the Network Lock and nothing is getting out if you get disconnected.
