Competing connection when using same config with two devices

Recommended Posts

Hi,

this might be a stupid question, but are two connections from two devives - using the same profile - in a kind competing situation?

Here is what I observed in my case:

  • Device A: iPhone 6 with OpenVPN app
  • Device B: iPad Pro with OpenVPN app

Both devices are in the same (corporate) WiFi and I have installed the same profile in both apps on both devices (Asia/TCP/443 - but it should not matter as long it is the same config).

When I establish connection with that profile with device A, everything works as expected.

When I then connect device B with the very same profile which is already "in use" by device A, I notice in the OpenVPN iOS app of device A that is is disconnecting, while I am trying to connect through the same profile with device B.

My question: is this expected? Is it not possible to use the same OpenVPN config/profile in the same (WiFi-) network from multiple devices? Is only one device allowed to connect through the same profile within the same network (from a single AirVPN account)?

To bypass this issue, I usually connect device A through Asia/TCP/443 and device B through Singapore/TCP/443 as both profiles connect me to a Singapore server anyway.
But I'd still like to know why this does not work.

I can also reproduce this when I pick a particular server and try to connect the second device after the first device has been connected. The first device connection is always "kicked out" as soon as I connect the second one with the same profile.

Thanks for any input!

Hello!

This is normal and expected, due to how OpenVPN works, when both devices use the same certificate/key pair and connect to the same OpenVPN daemon. Just use different client certificate/key pairs on each device, Instructions can be found here:

Kind regards
