Transmission for Mac

Have done lots of reading on whether or not to check "Automatically Map Port" or not in Transmission, but I still don't quite understand the difference of whether I should or not. Is it a difference in security on the router? Any help would be much appreciated.

If you mean to port forward, then you must pick a port number in the Client Area here and then put that number into Transmission. Any sort of automatic changes to port numbers in Transmission wouldn't be good. Assuming it is port forwarding you're talking about, then no it's not security related; except for how it's not recommended to forward ports on your router when done so elsewhere already. You can find some torrenting guides in the New User guide in my signature. I can't find the setting you refer to, so I wonder if it's unique to Mac.

Will check out the torrent guide. And yes, I already have a port forwarded, and it seems to work whether "Automatically Map Port" is checked or not. That's why I'm curious as to whether to check it or not and what difference it makes. It may well be specific to Transmission for Mac. The full option is ""Automatically Map Port" (NAT traversal uses either NAT-PMP or UPnP).

Settings to do with NAT and similar are usually disabled .
