The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request. (code=995)

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm getting real bad speed and reliability problems on one of my VM's.  The following lines are part of the logs:

. 2018.01.01 20:05:38 - OpenVPN > write to TUN/TAP : The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.   (code=995)
. 2018.01.01 20:05:38 - Above log line repeated 433 times more

I've reset the winsock config, replaced the NIC and transfered the VM over to new storage so pretty sure its not my infrastructure.  Any ideas?

Thanks

Hello,

Under Windows, this critical error might be caused by a possible bug in OpenVPN triggered when the log file is large, can you please check? Also compare with: https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/ticket/454

Strange that it comes out with Eddie, though, because it is reproducible only with OpenVPN Connect usage as far as we know. Maybe this is not the real cause, but it's worth a check anyway.

Kind regards

Hi - thanks for the reply.  No fraid not - its a newly built machine - apart from the pagefile there is nothing large at all on the C drive.  I've provided more log details below - not sure if that gateway warning is relevant since the conneciton is dropping at that point.  Note that I do get connectivity - speedtest seems fine.

Also something else worth mentioning - at 11:43:22 the following error is in the windows system event log

Name resolution for the name yztqpzkbxabxjcglbbgcgpjdzysghixu.checkdns.airvpn.org timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

Anyone got any ideas?  The performance on this VM is of a magnitude slower than my other Win7 host.  Its not the internet I have 3 broadband connections and its poor regardless.  If I switch off airvpn things pick up immediately...

This depends on your CPU and VM software on the host.

You should try with Virtualbox 5.x and try different paravirtualization engines (Default,Hyper-V,KVM).

Its on the same host as the VM that is working fine. FYI they are 2 x E5-2670 V2 with 128GB RAM and 10GBE under ESXi -  I'm not going to go on a tour of all known virtualisation engines for something that is specific to this VM only.  Bottom line is without airvpn the machine is fine - switch it on and the performance goes to poo.
