Very slow download speed on Virgin Media when connected to VPN

When connected to AirVPN, my download speeds are significantly slower than when I use clear internet without the VPN. When I am downloading torrents, I max out at 100Mbps download speed without VPN. When  connected to AirVPN, my download speed maxes out at 20-25Mbps. Results are similar on speedtest.net under the same circumstances. I have tried a few different solutions including connecting to different servers in the AirVPN client, and I've tried using different protocols (SSH and SSL), but the speed remains extremely slow. Is this a known issue with Virgin Media? I could accept a small decrease but my download speed is 75% slower on VPN compared to without it. I will have to look elsewhere for another provider if I can't find a solution that improves the speed.

The thread LZ1 linked to is a good one and I suggest you read it but as a long term AirVPN/Virgin user I can say that I get the full 212Mbps on an open connection while I get only 130Mbps broadband download speed using AirVPN and checked by speedtest. This however has no bearing on your downloads as if their are not enough seeds available then you will never get a download at that speed. The only times I have received a full speed download is while installing/updating Elite Dangerous when it peaks usually around 190Mbps and also on Steam, again when installing/updating games but these companies have huge servers. For downloading tv shows etc from the net the most I have ever achieved is a max of 18Mbps but this is limited by the number of seeds and is still very fast as you will download a 1.5GB tv show or film in less than 5 minutes at that speed. AirVPN cannot speed up what isn't available if you understand what I mean. Maybe someone with more technical savvy than me can explain this better.

I have tried several but find that Asterope and Naos give me the best results but perhaps this is because they are the closest to me geographically.

I am with Virgin Media too. Do you guys ever experience constant connection timeouts with AirVPN?
