Linksys E1200 / DD-WRT / poor data xfer performance

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm probably going to get lynched immediately for having the cheapest router possible... but please advise, if you are familiar with the router.

I have Linksys E1200 connected to AirVPN via UDP OpenVPN tunnel, and I max out at 5mbps while using tunnel. (20mbps ADSL circuit)

Is this the best to be expected from a budget router?

Using the windows AirVPN client, I get full bandwidth, so, apart from configuration, it appears to be the router that is bottleneck.

 - But I do need the VPN to extend to my full network, not just one laptop/client.

All advice welcome.

I do have a RaspberryPi sitting at the back of my office drawer, I've heard thats a good way to get a decent 'budget' OpenVPN tunnel going - should I give up on the E1200 and pursue this?

 - I'm familiar with linux, so shouldnt be a big deal.

I want to avoid spending $150+ on a new router right now, but if thats my only real option, then will have to see the options.

Hello !

OpenVPN on routers is quite taxing, so it's really important to have good hardware. Do you really need more than 3 devices? Anyway, they say that if you use a

Moderators do not speak on behalf of AirVPN. Only the Official Staff account does. Please also do not run Tor Exit Servers behind AirVPN, thank you.
Did you make a guide or how-to for something? Then contact me to get it listed in my new user guide's Guides Section, so that the community can find it more easily.

Hi, thanks for you suggestions, but I did go ahead and set up a Raspberry Pi as a VPN Gateway.

It works brilliantly, I'm pretty much getting line speed.

Apart from a few tiny tweaks, I pretty much kept to this guide; https://gist.github.com/superjamie/ac55b6d2c080582a3e64

You definitely need to have linux experience, but the results are excellent, if you are on a tight budget or already own a Pi.

It is strongly recommended to using a Pi v2 or v3, the latest ARM cpu & extra ram is worth every penny.
