If i transfer 1 Mbps how much extra data is transfered when using a VPN service compared to normal?

This question depends on which connection method you are using, if you are using any additional

tunnel (SSL/SSH) etc. To measure it accurately, just download a test 10MB file with the VPN enabled

and check with Wireshark or similar what was the overhead in your case.

Thanks for the detailed answer.  I was wondering if there is a ballpark figure say, for example using a VPN adds an extra 10% to data use. 

 

The reason that I ask is because I have a limited mobile data plan but use openvpn when ever I am connected to my network.

Your estimation of 10% is probably correct.

Note that the theoretical overhead is only 69 bytes per packet, however in real life this might vary,

highly depending on your type of application traffic as well.

I've heard overheads of 20% in general terms. But of course conditions always matter.

Personally, I get excellent speeds.

~10% OpenVPN overhead is correct actually.

I don't even lose 5%. Depends on the factors mentioned earlier, but also on your ISP and the server you connect to.
