ANSWERED Privacy Question on US AirVPN Servers

Recommended Posts

So I am a US resident. Thus in my scenario the US AirVPN servers offer the least latency from what I can tell. However I am hesitant to switch to the US servers though because I am not certain how that will affect my privacy. I am assuming that the US based AirVPN servers are applicable to US laws and regulations since they reside in the US.

If I were to connect to these servers instead of the default for me which is Canadian based servers, how would connecting to the US based servers effect my privacy? Do these servers have the same, minimal amount of logging just like the other servers? Can an internet service provider from the US obtain any logs or records from said servers? Is connecting to a VPN server in the same country as secure as connecting to a foreign server?

I mostly do an occasional amount of P2P sharing. However my ISP has very strict regulations, i don't want to risk them having access to the records of my occasional peer to peer sharing.

I just like my privacy and don’t want to risk losing it. If anybody can answer my questions, I would appreciate it.

Hello !

Despite the us' reputation, they don't require VPN providers to log I believe. AirVPN also upholds the same strict rules for all their servers, regardless of location.

Because in short, if AirVPN didn't think they could maintain a server in location X that corresponds to their values and objectives, they simply wouldn't put a server there.

Since AirVPN is a logless VPN, they pretty much don't have any logs to give, even IF they wanted to or were forced to, when a given entity requested it; but they don't

comply with these things anyway.

You can also check their new servers here and note how they all follow the same rules:

https://airvpn.org/forum/9-news-and-announcement/

Just like every other Air server, Miaplacidus and Rasalas support OpenVPN over SSL and OpenVPN over SSH.

As usual no traffic limits, no logs, no discrimination on protocols and hardened security against various attacks with separate entry and exit-IP addresses.

Do not hesitate to contact us for any information or issue.

Kind regards and datalove
AirVPN Team

Look at that, not only do they have integrity, but they gave us datalove! Now how many people do you know who do that?! Haha!

I'd say on technical terms it's as secure connecting to a server in your home country. However I think it's generally a good idea to connect to one outside your own country,

if you can. The whole point of a VPN however, is to protect your traffic. AirVPN itself doesn't mind if you use p2p at all and your ISP can't see what you're doing anyway.

Just make sure you've got no leaks of any kind, whether IP, DNS or WebRTC leaks. You can check this at www.ipleak.com and see. If you don't see any of your own addresses

there, then it's likely no one else does either; including your ISP.

Also, you can check out this thread:

https://airvpn.org/topic/16774-anonymous-vpn-providers-2016-edition-tf/

There you can see the questions posed and what AirVPN specifically, answered to each of them. So you can see number 1, 4, 5 and 6 for instance.

(1. Do you keep ANY logs which would allow you to match an IP-address and a time stamp to a user of your service? If so, what information and for how long?)

1. No, we don’t keep such logs.

(4. In the event you receive a takedown notice (DMCA or other), how are these handled?)

4. They are ignored, except when they refer to web sites running behind our VPN servers. Due to our service features, it is perfectly possible to run web sites from behind our servers: we also provide DDNS for free to our customers. For these specific cases, we can act similarly to a hosting provider and we verify that the web site is compliant to our Terms of Service. We have had web sites spreading viruses and other malware (verified without any doubt) and we intervened to quickly stop them when we were warned about the issue.

(5. What steps are taken when a valid court order or subpoena requires your company to identify an active user of your service? Has this ever happened?)

5. Since we can’t provide information that we don’t have, an “ex-post” investigation is the only solution, if and when applicable. So far we have had no court orders of this kind.

(6. Is BitTorrent and other file-sharing traffic allowed on all servers? If not, why?)

6. Yes, it’s allowed on every and each server. We do not discriminate against any protocol or application and we do not monitor traffic or traffic type.

Look at number 1. That's better than porn man, lol.

In short, AirVPN is superior to most other services I think, both in terms of sheer technical know-how, but also ethics.

They recently disowned ICANN, a huge internet institution, because basically long-story short, they suck and AirVPN doesn't accept suckers,

because in short, AirVPN is much like Chuck Norris:

And if you know who he is, you know that one does not simply deny Chuck Norris lmao.

So finally, since your ISP doesn't know what you're doing, since you're using a VPN, you should be very safe regardless of what you're doing; of course, keep it clean lol, no serious crime. Also, unless latency is a really big issue for you or otherwise critical, you can just let the AirVPN client, called Eddie, automatically connect you to the recommended server at the time. If you go to your settings, you can

make AirVPN start automatically and to enable Network Lock automatically. This way, even if you forget, then all your traffic will still be routed through AirVPN; even

if there's connection issues (normally called a kill switch). I always enable Network Lock at login. It's quite sweet. This way you're sure nothing leaks out of your VPN tunnel.

Oh and P2P itself isn't illegal. It's just a way of doing things. It's *what* you download which can be illegal, haha. Not the protocols themselves.

But don't worry. If you're just an occasional downloader, then it's fairly unlikely you'll get into trouble. I mean, there's people out there who make a lifestyle out of

downloading lol. Just make sure you have a good Bittorent client, such as qBittorent and that its settings are ok.

I hope this answers your questions. If not, wait until master zhang or lord giganerd arrive or any of the other disciples of AirVPN.

Thanks for the response LZ1, that seems to answer all of my questions. Latency is an issue for me because one of my servers i access via remote desktop protocol (RDP). When i want to use AirVPN on said remote server, i turn it on and have AirVPN's dynamic DNS setup so i can reconnect to the new RDP session. However the RDP session is heavily based on the latency. Lower latency better connection. I now feel safer when considering the US servers for their lower latency.

Thank you

Haha, thank you ! That was my first best answer lol.

I'm glad I could be of some use around here.

AirVPN is said to have an absolutely stellar reputation as far as VPNs go.
