ANSWERED I log on fine, and then ... Nothing happens

Hi,

 

I logged on AirVPN today, which I hadn't been doing for some weeks. Logging on went like a dream. The display claims some bytes are being up and downloaded. 

 

I then started my web browser. Not a single web page would load. I logged off AirVpn. All web pages work perfectly. This is 100 % reproducible, and has never happened before.

 

Any idea about what causes this problem?

 

I use Windows 7.

Do you have anything like proxy set up in your browser?

Start with basic troubleshooting like browser settings reset etc.

The TAP adapter might have the wrong DNS settings. If they are locked in from a previous VPN or something, that can cause this issue. If you reset the DNS settings to set automatically in the tap adapter, that might be a good troubleshooting step.

 

For example, I've had my TAP adapter locked in on 10.44.0.1 when AirVPN was using 10.4.0.1 or whatever. (just example numbers).

I have not done any changes to my computer (consciously at least) since the last time I used AirVPN and everything worked fine.

 

I also use Open VPNs DNS service, but this problem occurs regardless if I use their DNS service or if I have it switched off.

 

I do not use a proxy.

 

Any help would be appreciated. The TAP thing does not really say me anything – the only thing I associate with TAP is a Portuguese airline …

 

I have included the log of a short session today below. Same thing happens. The AirVPN Session window shows some traffic up and down, but no websites load.

We're not likely using the Portuguese airline to connect people here... TAP is a virtual network interface. Wikipedia's description is:

 

Packets sent by an operating system via a TUN/TAP device are delivered to a user-space program which attaches itself to the device. A user-space program may also pass packets into a TUN/TAP device. In this case the TUN/TAP device delivers (or "injects") these packets to the operating-system network stack thus emulating their reception from an external source.

I must admit I feel kind of foolish that the whole thing was due to an old client. I guess I have become too used to software updating itself automatically.

This happens whether I'm at home or on public wi-fi. Shortly after connecting (30 - 60 seconds) the client shows I'm sending data, but not receiving anything. Sometimes I'll open a terminal and ping some random site that's not blocked like "yahoo.com". I'll get 24 - 75 pings and then the connection goes dead. Now, the client may realize nothing is happening, but it just disconnects, looks for the fastest connection, and usually ends up trying the same server it was having problems with. This happens with several servers and I haven't figured out a pattern yet or if it's specific servers. Oh, I do have the protocol on the client set to automatic. Any suggestions?

From China you need (not always, but very frequently) to use an OpenVPN over SSL conection, called "SSL Tunnel - Port 443" in the Air client. You can change connection modes in the Air client by selecting "AirVPN" -> "Preferences" -> "Protocols".

From China you need (not always, but very frequently) to use an OpenVPN over SSL conection, called "SSL Tunnel - Port 443" in the Air client. You can change connection modes in the Air client by selecting "AirVPN" -> "Preferences" -> "Protocols".

Interesting results. I was out earlier today and tried with the SSL box marked and afterwards with the SSH box checked. Same problem. It starts off and connects, but then suddenly I couldn't send anything through. Then the software realized nothing was going through and tried another server with the same result. At the moment I'm home and for now this seems to be working. I can upload the log files since there were a couple of errors I noted.
