Android APP VPN question

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I recently installed the Android openvpn app, and can connect using my AirVpn account. It works great, and if I visit whatismyipaddress website, it displays the new vpn address not my reall IP address (as expected). I connect to the internet with my android device via my home WI-FI.

Now, my question: Can any of my android apps which use my wireless network to determine my location (e.g., location services) determine my "real" IP address? The reason I ask is because I am using an android app whose functionality changes depending on the location of the IP address. I want the app to think I am from a different geographical area, but even with the airvpn running with the openvpn app (and despite a different IP address shown in my browser at whatismyipaddress), the android application behaves as if it knows my real location/real IP address, and not the one assigned by airvpn. Can anyone confirm that this is possible?

Thanks and cheers!!

Hello!

Usually geolocation software use a combination of GPS, cell site triangulation and local WiFi networks scanning to disclose your position with accuracy (A-GPS, that is Assisted GPS). If Location Services are on, connection to a VPN server may be necessary but not sufficient in order to hide your real position. You might like to read the following article:

Thanks - What I learned is that in my situation with the app I am using a vpn is not enough in these situations to spoof a location.

Hello!

Of course, your position is calculated as described in the article, it's not based only on your IP address.

You have to disable ALL the geolocation features (not only GPS tracking), as described in the article.

Kind regards
