Need help getting OpenVPN on Linux Mint/Ubuntu

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm a bit new to LInux.  I have some experience but I'm not a lot.  I installed Linux Mint on a very old machine.  It's so old that Ubuntu wouldn't install on it.  Linux Mint is a fork from Ubuntu so most of the programs you can install on Ubuntu also work on Mint.  I am running the Cinnamon desktop on Mint.

i'm getting a grayed out "save" button and the window is asking for a CA Certificate file that I can't find.

Here are the steps I followed:

   1. I installed OpenVPN with this command line:   sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn-gnome.

   2. I restarted the computer.  OpenVPN does show as an option in the network-manager.

   3. I followed AirVPN's instructions for Ubuntu.  I clicked on the LInux icon to create a Linux config file.  The config file I download for Linux has an .ovpn extension.  The instructions say to unzip the config file but I don't see how to unzip an .opvn file.

   4. When I use network-manager and import the file, the "save" button is gray out and the window is asking for a CA Certificate file.

   5. When I use network-manager with the OpenVPN option, again the "save" button is gray out and the window ask for several config files.

Hello!

You have probably missed in the instructions the part where they say to tick "Advanced Mode" and then tick "Separate certs/keys from .ovpn files", in the Configuration Generator. In this way you will have separate configuration, certificates and key files.

By default the CG generates .ovpn files embedded with certificates and key.

Kind regards
