ANSWERED IP Address to Tap Windows Adapter Denied By DHCP Server

Recommended Posts

My system is Windows 8 x64 with DD-WRT.  Five days ago my connection to airvpn became really unstable and the logs show that my connection has been resetting itself every 1min 12 secs. Looking at the PC Event Viewer I can see that each disconnect coincides with an error "The IP Address Lease 10.4.20.xxx for the Network Card (tap adapter).... has been denied by the DHCP server"...

I have no idea where to start with this problem so I've uninstalled openvpn, rebooted, reinstalled openvpn 2.3.2-1003; checked the settings on the dd-wrt router and reinstalled the security certificates, rebooted everything...but the problem is still there. The weird thing is I booted up my PC this morning and my status says I'm connected to a UK server, whatsmyip shows I'm in the UK but I haven't started open or airvpn and the tap adapter has a red cross showing it's unplugged.

So am I connecting to airvpn via the dd-wrt? Is there another hidden tap adapter that's conflcting with the visible one? ipconfig confirms the tap adapter is disconnected. When I start openvpn it connects to the server I choose, the tap adapter starts but then I get the DHCP error.

Am I misunderstanding something? If I have dd-wrt set up I don't need to start openvpn or use the tap adapter? I'm confused because that's how it seems to be working. I've attached a screenshot (20) with the adapter on to show it all looks fine and there's only one installed but simply being on is what's causing the problem. Without it everything seems fine

Hello,

at the moment your account has been connected for approx. 5 hours to some UK server without interruptions and it's still exchanging data successfully.

From your description, it looks like you try an OpenVPN connection from your Windows 8 system after an OpenVPN connection has been already established from the DD-WRT router. Please don't do that: either connect with your router or with your computer.

A double connection (OpenVPN over OpenVPN) to two different servers is possible only with two different accounts.

Kind regards

Yes, I see. There's nothing in the forums about how to change servers in a dd-wrt router. It may seem obvious but changing the IP address in the OpenVPN client can sometimes be quite hit and miss so I somehow talked myself into believing that to get a VPN connection I had to use the tap adapter in the PC.

Would be nice to have some sort of interface like AirVPN to change servers but no great shakes it works fine as it is.

Thanks for your help
