I've noticed that my speeds are slowed a great deal when I'm connected to my 5ghz network and the vpn. Testing on testmy.net, without a VPN connection, I reliably get speeds of somewhere between 150 and 190mbps. When connected, I get around 50-60, which is frustrating. Sometimes after being connected for a while, out of nowhere, speeds will drop to 40. The issue is still present when i'm on the 2.4ghz network, but it's less severe as I cap out at 70-100 normally.

This evening I tried messing with the protocol settings instead of leaving it on "automatic," and found that trying SSL port 443 increased speeds to 80-100mpbs. Speeds still drop after a sustained connection, though. Are my issues probably just limitations on the part of AirVPN, or does the protocol/speed change point to my ISP throttling VPN traffic? Are there any other settings that might give me better speeds?

Well, assuming you connect to a server that's not overloaded, it's not an AirVPN problem.  It's just a matter of fact with VPN and that you're using a connection that's likely relegated to low priority by your ISP and transit/peer providers.  Sure, some ports and protocols may not be as affected by traffic shaping as others.  Your best bet is to test to different locations (not different servers in the same location) and find one that works best for you.  It will work best because the path between you and that server is most conducive to good speed, not because those servers are inherently better.

I've definitely tried different server locations and have found the ones that work better than others. The issues outlined above were found using my most compatible servers.
