Noob - can't connect to server

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I've got a macbook pro with el capitan installed. The Air VPN has been working fine until the other night when the battery died on my laptop over night. The day after I couldn't connect to the internet unless I was using the VPN so I restarted the laptop, now I can't connect to the AirVPN server at all. Most coding/network jargon is lost on me so any help would be really appreciated!

What happened is that when your laptop battery died, every process was shut down, including the VPN client. When this happens, the DNS servers do not get changed back from AirVPN's DNS (which can only be used when connected to an Air server, that is why you couldn't connect unless the VPN was on)

In order to fix this, you must change your DNS server, this is how to do it on Mac OS X.

  1. Click on your “Apple” menu and choose “System Preferences“.
  2. Double-Click on the “Network” icon.
  3. Go to the “TCP/IP” tab. If your computer is configured to use a dynamic IP address, (notice “Using DHCP” in the drop-down box next to “Configure”). This is where you can change your DNS settings, by entering the appropriate DNS servers in the “DNS Servers” box.
  4. Enter two or more DNS servers. If you do not know what to put here, I recommend you use some of OpenNIC's DNS servers, link can be found here: https://www.opennicproject.org/
  5. Apply your settings by clicking the “Apply Now” button.

You’re done! You may need to restart your browser and reconnect to the Internet before the changes come into effect.

I hope I helped you!
