infosec.exchange mastodon instance

Recommended Posts

Posted ... (edited)

Hey!
It seems the mastodon instance https://infosec.exchange/ is blocking AirVPN IPs.

The server admin told me he's using the "stopforumspam" blocklist and some custom rules and will look into it, but I'm not sure yet if he'll be able to help or change the rules based on my "toot".

I tried various AirVPN server locations (varisous swedish servers, varisous NL servers and Germany) - all with the same result, the page is simply not loading and times out after a while, so my guess is it's some kind of "drop" rule?

It's the same via browser and a mastodon iOS client (which as far as I know use an API to the mastodon servers)

Disabling VPN - I have access right away.

Is there something that can be done from the end of AirVPN? Like a "remove us from the blackist" request?
Thanks :)

A nice admin you have, following the clue you will arrive at this post:

yup, VPNs are treated just like any other IP.  if they're listed and I see that its a data center IP address then I'm not going to remove it with a request from a VPN user, only a VPN company representative.
Also this, same thread:

If a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is used then your forum receives the VPN IP-Address rather than the posters personal IP-Address. In that way, VPNs are often used to hide the actual source of postings. If VPNs allow their users to spam then that VPN deserves to become known as a source of spam.
They do live in their own world. At the same time he admits:

It is a very similar situation with Tor connections, in that due to the method of working a Tor user is also anonymous whilst using a Tor browser. That also tends to cause Tor endpoints to become synonymous with criminal activity & spam.

I’m reasonably sure that’s not „my“ admin.

I am sure though, it’s very common to use this - and other lists - like it. nothing wrong with that in general. nobody can deny VPNs are used for malicious activities s well.  Edited ... by screak42

He or she replied to you, let you know what's the likely culprit. You could've gone without a reply, just silence.
Now it's up to AirVPN @Staff to check this situation out. I don't know what's their policy on handling these. Though it appears that spam list did not require any proof or verification in the past to submit a spam report. And as per quote, they will only talk to staff.
