petra2022 1 Posted ... (edited) I have a python script running on a android phone which needs to be behind a VPN connection. I can connect via ssh to the phone but over the public VPN address which is very slow. I would like to connect directly over the local network. The problem is that the current Eddie app don't support wlan connections (System->Exclude local networks from the VPN, exclude local networks except mobile networks... which I suspect to be all wlan networks). Is there a way to allow local IP/Port addresses somewhere else? Perhaps with Custom Directives? Edit1: Eddi version 2.5 (VC27) Edit2: mobile networks are not WLAN connections (misunderstanding on my part), theoretically WLAN should work on a mobile phone if connecting to local ip address. It is not working in my case with AirVPN on, only if AirVPN is turned off on the mobile. Edited ... by petra2022 Share this post Link to post

This should be possible by default. You are using a local IP address to connect, right? Yes, the local IP address starts with 192.168 which I viewed with ifconfig on the mobile device. The ssh connection works fine when i disconnect mobile VPN. As soon the VPN connection is active the ssh 192.168... command on my PC is blocked and after some time I get a timeout error. I tryied also to disable the VPN-Lock option on the phone, but still no connection with VPN active. Edited ... by petra2022 Share this post Link to post

petra2022 1 Posted ... I wrote to the Support Team, after analyzing my situation they suggested me to use Eddi 3.0 for Android instead of Eddi 2.5. Without any changes to termux I was able to connect over the LAN network to the phone. OpenVPN does not restrict communications within the local network, but the ssh daemon might bind to the virtual tun interface and therefore it is no more reachable on the physical interface. The fact that it can be reached over the VPN server exit-IP address (with port forwarding, we assume) is telling. Furthermore, if "Always on VPN" Android setting is enabled, no traffic should be allowed outside the VPN tunnel while the tunnel is up. On the other hand, if you disable that option and also "Block traffic if VPN is not active", then you might have traffic leaks in case of unexpected disconnections. But it still not working. I have looked into the sshd_config file, there where no binding options specified. When I start the sshd with debug option it prints out the bindingsphone$ sshd -d ... debug1: Bind to port 8022 on ::. Server listening on :: port 8022. debug1: Bind to port 8022 on 0.0.0.0. Server listening on 0.0.0.0 port 8022. looks very general to me. Connection with AirVPN off, it connects just finePC$ ssh myuser@192.168.1.8 -p 8022but the same command is not working with AirVPN on. In the sshd_config file I also tried insert ListenAddress 192.168.1.8. What is strange for me thou, when AirVPN is on and sshd is not running I getssh: connect to host 192.168.1.8 port 8022: Connection refusederror and with sshd is runningssh: connect to host 192.168.1.8 port 8022: Connection timed outSomehow AirVPN allows to access the IP and port but sshd is not able to establish a complete connection and hangs silent until a time out. Does sshd use a additional communication channel, which AirVPN is still blocking? I feel I am so close to the solution. When sshd is not running, connection refused is expected: the kernel just doesn't know where to send the packet to (the port doesn't exist). Connection timeout, on the other hand, makes us think that the packet is not refused by the kernel, but dropped. This is a problem which might be caused by OpenVPN, but not on all devices strangely... let's make a cross-check. If possible, install Eddie 3.0 beta 2 from here:https://airvpn.org/forums/topic/51587-eddie-android-edition-30-preview-available/ This version includes a special feature, dedicated to WireGuard, to allow access to and from the local network (normally WireGuard would not allow them), by explicitly leaving entire private subnets (all the possible ones in IPv4 and IPv6 spaces) outside the tunneling scope. If possible, install Eddie from the APK. run it, open the "Settings" view and expand "System", then enable "Exclude local networks from the VPN". Connect USING WIREGUARD (default configuration), and not OpenVPN, from the quick connection tab or the AirVPN servers tab, then test again whether you can reach sshd locally.
