SSH or SSL Protocol when running Asus router

Recommended Posts

Is this possible? Has anyone managed to successfully install either of these as a VPN client on an Asus router? I currently have 2 dedicated U.S. VPN server clients and the U.S. (round-robin?) VPN server client installed on an RT-AX86U router running Merlin firmware using UDP protocol. All 3 of those client work flawlessly.

When I go to the Config Generator and pick Router, then Advanced, all SSH and SSL options are grayed out. At the bottom of the list it says "SSH/SSL modes unsupported with ChromeOS". But then it says "For SSH/SSL Tunnel, see this guide. Only available on Windows, Linux and macOS. Region hosts always resolved." This router runs Linux. I wouldn't trust anything running ChromeOS.

Thanks

Most routers run Linux, that doesn't mean they've got a terminal you can use like on a desktop Linux, or all binaries needed for OpenVPN over SSH/SSL. Routers can also run a small sortiment of firmwares, some are more open than others. That's why, when selecting Router, SSH/SSL are greyed out – it's not a thing that would work constantly across all routers.

If you've got some form of terminal access to the router such as through SSH, you can try the guide you linked to. You do this on your own risk, though. In any case, the definition here is Linux != Router.
