ANSWERED Slow connection to NL & BEL servers despite low latency (fiber)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Over the past couple of weeks my connection has been discernably slowing down.
Through trial and error I figured out it had nothing to do with my client, but with the server location.

For example:
If I activate Eddie and connect to any server in NL (latency ~17ms), I can download the Eddie client on the airvpn website with a max download speed of a mere 30KB/s (8 minutes waiting time)
If I connect to a server in Belgium (latency 21ms), I get a download speed of 250KB/s
If I connect to a server in Norway (latency 29ms), I get a download speed of 3.3 MB/s
If I connect to a server in Canada (latency ~100ms), I get a download speed of 400KB/s that slowly increases to up to 800KB/s
If i deactive Eddie and network lock, the download is finished instantly

I have no idea why the connection to NL and BEL servers is so slow. They have the lowest latency for me - so they occupy almost all of the first 100 server slots in my list, and they are geographically located closer to me than those in Norway and Canada. Anyone know why this is? Are they rerouted around the globe and then sprinkled with fairy dust to gain low latency? ;)

It's a bit annoying currently, because everytime Eddie starts up on boot, I have to manually select a server in Norway, because the client automatically choses an NL server due to the lowest latency.
For me it would suffice if there was a way to kick out all NL and BEL server from my list ...

I am running Eddie 2.18.9 on Win10, TAP 9.12.2
Already set the buffer size to 512 KB but that didn't change anything. Could it be IPv6 related?

On Winntun: with folks having compatibility problems and not a stable version released yet, I am waiting.
On a new TAP version: Good point. Haven't updated in a while because of some issue with 9.21 which bricked Eddie for me.

Updating the TAP driver to 9.24.2 did help a bit.
Now I get constant dl speeds on any NL & BEL servers of ~260KB/s
Still a far cry from the 3.3 MB/s on Norwegian servers.
(Buffer size is already set to 512KB)

Will try the Wintun route later today to see whether this fixes the problem.

So I tried to get wintun to work with Eddie

- Uninstalled Eddie
- Installed OpenVPN 2.5
- Installed Eddie
- added "windows-driver wintun" to opvn
- inserted "openvpn.exe" in OpenVPN custom path

Null reference error occurs and Eddie is cycling through server disconnects

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Disconnecting

If I reset Eddie to default settings everything is fine again - but of course no wintun usage.
Anyone know how to fix this?

What you get there speed-wise is "speed-pain". (:
