I am confused now. Is the proof missing, or is the statement not valid?

Proven outdated. ProtonVPN signs their own apps itself and is owned by ProtonMail Research Group based in Switzerland.

I'd like to add something about Mullvad:  I've noticed them bein listed at prism-break.org as a preferred option. The source code of a number of things is open on GitHub, which look like forks of dependencies for their Rust-written app and their infrastructure, some native, some (re)written in Rust. Actually, it's interesting to browse through.
I've heard quite a few good things about Rust, getting interested in looking much closer into it. From all I gather it's got some nifty security features which make certain kinds of vulnerabilities much less likely to occur. Perhaps it's the reason why they seem to favor it. :D

I tried Express earlier this year.  It's fast but really, really basic.  Too creepy for me, their client which they call something like "the app that doesn't suck as much" plays scrolling ads, they're constantly trying to upsell, they come across as a bunch of clowns.

It gets better!  I paid for a year subscription because it was very cheap for a while but they cut me off after a few days.  I guess I missed the emails asking for a phone number to keep my account active, which I will never ever do since phones by law cannot be secure or private and they're all attached to Apple or Google.

Good thing was Express refunded my payment.  That's about the only good thing, seems to be an ad company.  They're #1 or #2 in most reviews; someone pays for all that native advertising.
