Vulnerable IP V6 on My Synology NAS

Recommended Posts

Hello,
First up I want to say that this issue is probably a configuration issue on my end rather than anything wrong with AirVPN so I'm after some help in sorting it out.

I have a Synology NAS (DS1812+ running DSM 6.2.2-24922 Update 4) running an OpenVPN client, here is an image of the client details on the AirVPN site when it is running.

Here is a quick image showing the network interfaces when it is connected.

I have used a proxy setup for a browser on my PC to connect to the internet via the NAS so it would use the same config.
I then went to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ from the browser using a proxy
It did say that IPV4 was not detected but it gave my correct public IPV6 address and correctly identified my ISP and my location.

I have also setup eddie on my PC as a client there. I have disabled IPV6 (otherwise eddie would not start) and went to https://whatismyipaddress.com/. This time it showed no IPV6 and that my IPV4 was the AirVPN public IP; so it was all running correctly.

My concern is that my IPV6 is currently showing on my NAS and identifying me to the world.
Are there any config changes I can make to stop this happening?

EDIT

After some further work I think I may have found something.
My Synology NAS only has version 2.3 of the OpenVPN client which (at least according to the config generator on this site) doesn't support IPV6 tunnelling. Synology would need to release OpenVPN 2.4 before that works.
What I have done is disabled IPV6 from the LAN port configuration on my NAS, and now https://whatismyipaddress.com/ is correctly just showing the AirVPN IP4 address.

Would anybody care to wade in and tell me if what I have done is correct to hide my location.
Thank You

These don't seem to work. How did you embed these?

Are you doing this setup because you only want your browser to be routed via VPN?

Hello,
When I originally posted the message I just put in the url address, but when I edited the post for some reason the addresses were changed in the editor.
Here they are again

They key here is that I want everything on my NAS to be routed by VPN and be secure.
I used the proxy with the browser as a site that the NAS connects to requires that my browser connect with the same IP address.
I just happened to use http:// https://whatismyipaddress.com/ when I found the IPV6 issue

Oh, but you can accomplish that by simply connecting to the same server with your computer. You can even use the same port and protocol.
Use the Devices feature to generate a different pair of keys and give it a good name, and when using Eddie or the Config Generator you need only to select the new pair with the name you gave it.

This by the way is correct in your case. I can say you solved that one yourself. :)
