ANSWERED AirVPN takes 2-3 mins to connect or disconnect

Recommended Posts

Hi,

have a weird issue on a new Dell notebook: AirVPN takes 2-3 mins to connect or disconnect. This machine is running Win 10 LTSC x64 with latest AirVPN 2.16.3.

On another machine (desktop), I'm running the exact same set up, yet connect/disconnect takes a 10-20 secs...

Any ideas what could be causing this on the Dell notebook ? I already re-installed AirVPN multiple times...

Thanks.

No, but we miss your Eddie logs/support file. In the Logs tab, click the lifebelt icon and paste it here in LOG formatting (top left button of post editor).

Huh. Curious. You block IPv6, but Eddie still pushes IPv6 directives. But that's not where it hangs – it's here:

Can you maybe try Eddie 2.18.x? Don't be afraid of the word beta, it's actually quite stable. :)

installed 2.18.5 beta, no change, it still hangs at OpenVPN > open_tun...

so how can we stop it from hanging there ?

and where would I be blocking
IPv6 ? (did not set that on purpose)

Thanks.

Okay, pity.

Preferences > Networking > Layer IPv6: set to Block. But it's already set to Block according to the support file.

A small experiment…
In Eddie preferences > Advanced (I think), deselect Upgrade to latest tun version or similar.
Then uninstall your current TAP driver and reboot.
Now, there's talk about a replacement of the default TAP adapter – WINTUN. It seems more modern, faster and with less issues. If you don't want to do this, do the above steps but instead of WINTUN install TAP 9.9.3_2. Link is pointing directly to the last official version of TAP 9.9.

depending on what version of openvpn bundled with Eddie a person may also have to download a newer version and force Eddie to use that instead of the bundled.

not sure if you left out a few steps (?), but I did that and it still hangs at OpenVPN > open_tun…

here's what I did:
AirVPN preferences > Advanced > checked "Disable driver upgrade".
Then in same window, clicked the uninstall driver button (which uninstalled the TAP driver).
Closed AirVPN.
Rebooted.
Installed
tap-windows-9.9.2_3.exe
Started AirVPN.

Device manager now shows driver version 9.0.0.9 for TAP Windows adapter... What do I need to do in order for AirVPN to use the 9.9.2_3 driver ?

most importantly: how can we stop it from hanging at OpenVPN > open_tun ?

You already do. For TAP 9.21.x 9.0.0.21 would be imprinted there. :)

I'm running out of ideas. Are you using any antivirus, firewall, anything else related to "more security" on your Windows machine?

I'm running SEP on this machine as on all other machines that use AirVPN, but SEP firewall is not installed

figured it out, hopefully this helps somebody else:

ended up inspecting Win firewall rules, and found a lot of weird AirVPN server block rules in there... so, uninstalled Eddie, restored Win firewall rules, re-installed Eddie... all working normal so far, will update if it starts acting up again...
